Fourth Sunday of Easter
Dear friends in Christ
I am writing my weekly reflection to you from a room overlooking the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow, Poland. The Southend Deanery Clergy have been on pilgrimage this week in the steps of Saint Pope John Paul II. We celebrated Mass in the new Basilica of Divine Mercy and were able to visit many of the sites associated with our newest Saint and also places connected with the lives of Saint Faustina and Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Obviously we had all of you in our hearts and prayers as we went about the shrines!
In a lovely sense, this was a fitting preparation for the celebration of this Sunday, the Universal Day of Prayers for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The Gospel of this Sunday - the Good Shepherd - is an image of what we priests have been called to be: the ones who look out for the flock, especially the weak, the lost and the strays. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, never tires of waiting for us and at those moments when we get a bit lost He is most especially seeking-us-out, calling us home.
This Sunday invites us each year to redouble our efforts at praying for those whom God has given us as shepherds to care for us: our Holy Father the Pope, the Bishops - in particular our Bishop-elect Fr Alan Williams - and our priests, all of whom are carried by the support of prayer; never underestimate the power your prayer has in producing new vocations and in sustaining those we have already. It is by the Sacrament of Holy Orders that Christ makes His presence in the world a continuing reality. Please continue to pray that there will always be sufficient priests to bring us Jesus in the Mass and Sacraments. Thank you too, for the continuing affection and support you offer us.

Essex Recusant Society
The next meeting of the Essex Recusant Society (Brentwood Diocesan Historical Society) will take place on Saturday 24th May at 2.30 pm at The Grange, 93 Queens Road, Brentwood. Sr. Patricia Harriss, a sister of the Congregation of Jesus, which was founded by Mary Ward will speak about ’ Mary Ward: Pilgrim and Pioneer’.

Thank you all for your patience over the last few months whilst we have been dotting the ‘i’s and crossing the ’t’s with regards to usage of our wonderful new Parish Centre. Paper copies of Terms and Conditions and Booking Application Forms are now available from the Parish Office for any Parishioner wishing to request the hire of one of the rooms within Parish Centre. Alternatively, bookings can be requested electronically using the forms on the Parish Website.
Many of our Parish Groups are now using the rooms on a regular basis and we are in the process of compiling a list with days, times and contact for the convenience of Parishioners. If you would like to start a new parish group or re-start an old group, and haven’t contacted us already, we look forward to hearing from you.
Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School & Nursery
We would like to invite all those involved with the Sacred Heart School over the last 100 Years to join us for our Centenary Celebrations on Sunday 6th July 2014 for an Open Air Mass at 11.00 am at the school, followed by celebrations afterwards. SVP St John Bosco Camp
The SVP St John Bosco Camp offers children aged 8-13 a sports and activity based holiday on a campsite in the Essex countryside. Run with a Catholic ethos, the camp is especially for children who may not have any other holiday this year. There are three weeks of the camp:
For boys: 26th July to 2nd August or 2nd to 9th August
For girls: 9th to 16th August

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
This Sunday, 11th May, is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations and there will be some vocations bookmarks for every parishioner, as well as other resources. The Vocations website has also been refreshed – if you are interested, please visit www.brentwoodvocations.org. All of the resources to promote Vocations to Priesthood and the Religious Life are paid for by the annual second collection, which will take place after Masses this weekend.
