Dear Friends in Christ
Tuesday is the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and it gives to the month the special character of the consideration of the life of Jesus and Mary through the praying of the Rosary. The feast day and this entire month recalls the intercession of Our Lady at a crucial moment in European history. In 1569 Pope St Pius V asked the Church to join in praying the Rosary to invoke the intercession of the Mother of God for protection against the incursions of Islam. On 7th October 1571 — at the naval battle of Lepanto — Christians won victory over the invading Turks who were threatening Christian Europe. As a result of this victory a special feast was established in thanksgiving and in perpetuity. We can renew our faith in the power of the Holy Rosary at this time, and through this simple and effective prayer, continue to work for the re-Christianisation of our continent. As individuals and families let us make a resolve, at this critical time, to offer the Holy Rosary for the needs of the Church and our Country. It is a joy and grace to know that the Rosary is prayed daily in the church after Holy Mass.
This weekend is our annual Mission Appeal. We welcome Mr Nicholas Hinde to the Parish from the organisation Survive-Miva who will speak at the end of the Masses about this UK-based lay Association that funds transport for the Church’s health and pastoral work in remote and under-developed parts of the world. This is obviously an important cause and it is their first Appeal in our Parish. Our practical help and prayers will make a concrete difference to the spreading of the Faith in these far away regions. God bless you all!

Bethlehem Missionary Group
A missionary group from Bethlehem Nativity will visit us next weekend,
10th/11th October, to briefly talk about the Holy Land and sell religious articles made out of olive wood from the Holy Land to help and support the poor Christian families; any help you could give to them would be much appreciated. They visited our Parish several years ago and their olive wood products and other devotional objects were very popular. The proceeds will go to help our fellow Christians in the Holy Land who suffer serious discrimination there.

The local community of Lay Carmelites invite you to join them on a journey of exploration, reflection and prayer at Our Lady & St Joseph Catholic Parish,

Our next event is a Jazz Evening featuring the Daisy Bowlers supported by DBJQ on Saturday 17th October in the Parish Centre. Tickets cost £12 each and are available from Nina Bridgeman, 472536. Bring you own drink and nibbles.
Abbotswick Retreat for those aged 11 - 13 years
Some time during the month of November, we would like to take a small group of children to Abbotswick House of Prayer (Brentwood) for a day of prayer and reflection. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your Faith in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Through prayer, discussion and reflection, the aim of the day will be to encourage you to think about and deepen your personal relationship with God. It will also help you to learn how to live out your Faith according to God’s Will. The cost of the day will be £12 and transport will be provided. In addition to giving financial aid locally, we support those further afield. Donations have been made to the “Mini Vinnies” – Young Vincentians; the SVP Holiday Fund, designed to give financial assistance to families who would otherwise be unable to afford a holiday; a Baby Feeding Station in Sudan; SVP Twinnage in India and the SVP Disaster Fund (in particular, for the benefit of Nepal).

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Leaflets are available at the back of the Church giving instructions how to fill a shoebox with gifts for a child this Christmas, who otherwise would receive nothing. Filled and ready to collect shoeboxes should be taken to the nearest drop- off point, Leigh Road Baptist Church (opposite the Church in Marguerite Drive) Tel no 01702 478698, by the closing date Wednesday 18th November. Please do not leave filled shoeboxes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Scripture Group
Fr Con Joyce’s Scripture Group will meet in the Parish Centre 8pm-9pm on Thursday, 8th October. These meetings are held to give us a better understanding of the Bible, to encourage us to read it and so help us to come closer to Jesus in our daily lives as Christians. All welcome.

Friday Lunches
Next Friday 9th October lunch will be available in the Parish Centre from 12.30pm. Come and enjoy delicious home made soup, a selection of sandwiches, plus a dessert and tea/coffee all for a minimum donation of £4.50. The proceeds for this month go to CAFOD. (Organised by CWL).
