Fifth Sunday of Lent
Dear friends in Christ
With the Fifth Sunday of Lent we begin the final stage of the Lenten pilgrimage: the emphasis moves from self-examination and repentance to a consideration of the suffering and death of Our Lord; this is Passiontide. The purple drapery in our churches tells us that something solemn and sad is occurring. Only when those drapes are removed at Easter will we behold the beautiful face of Christ again; for now It, and the images of the Saints, are removed from view so as to encourage us to contemplate the realities of things hidden from our eyes.
Next Sunday - Palm Sunday - we shall listen to St Luke’s account of the Passion (you are free to be seated if you need to during this!) and it is helpful if we can think of ourselves as the protagonists in this sacred drama. Except that it isn’t a drama but the very act by which we are saved and the hope of Heaven is given to us. We never take this for granted and throughout the entire Holy Week too, try to imagine ourselves as participants in those events. In the liturgy - especially at Mass - all of those events are made present again; they aren’t simply re-enacted as in a Passion Play but by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in the Church, the Body of Christ, we are able to be at those events. May God help us all to participate profoundly in soul and mind throughout the next two weeks.

Gift Aid Envelopes
New boxes of envelopes for those in the Gift Aid Scheme will be available for collection this weekend,12th/13th March. If you wish to gift aid your weekly offering by using envelopes, please complete a Gift Aid Form, available at the back of Church, and either hand it in to the Parish office or place it in the offertory collection. You will then receive a box of envelopes for your weekly collection.

What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to charity. It does not cost the donor anything over and above the amount of their donation. It is a scheme introduced by HM Revenue which allows charities to reclaim the basic rate tax you pay as a UK taxpayer.
It means that for every £1 you donate, the parish can claim an extra 25p of tax at no extra cost to you. Therefore if you donate £10 to the Parish, you will actually be giving £12.50.
Do I qualify for Gift Aid?
To qualify for Gift Aid, you need to be a UK taxpayer and to have paid sufficient Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax to cover your donation. Gift Aid can apply to donations of any amount, large or small - it all adds up!
How do I join the Gift Aid Scheme?
All that is required is to complete a Gift Aid declaration form filling in your full name, address and postcode and tick the box (indicating that you wish to join the scheme) confirming that you are a UK tax payer and we will do the rest.
Does joining the Gift Aid Scheme entail disclosure of ‘personal’ matters?
No-one is required to disclose their earnings, their employer, the amount of tax they pay or anything else that is personal to them or their family.
What if the donor already makes gift Aid donations to another Charity?
A donor may complete Gift Aid Declarations to as many charities as they wish provided they pay sufficient Income Tax to at least equal the amount of their donations.
Must membership of the Gift Aid Scheme run for any particular term?
No. There is no term commitment whatsoever. The declaration has no expiry date, does not have to be renewed or superseded and can be cancelled at any time by the donor.
Donations can be made during the collection at weekend masses using the envelopes provided or by monthly standing order.

Serving the Homeless
We are holding a Quiz Night on Saturday 9th April in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Lime Avenue at 7.30 pm. Tables of 8, £5 per person. Bring your own refreshments. To book a table please ring Linda Wall on 558217.
