School Admission Forms
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Schools - primary or secondary - for next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. Please come to the Parish Centre for these during the following times:
Saturday, 24th September between 2pm and 4pm
Sunday 25th September, between 2pm and 3pm
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism in the case of Primary School applications, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.

St Vincent de Paul Society in our Parish
One of the speakers at the National Conference spoke about the future and wanted to raise awareness of our work with the Youth Groups. In April, therefore, we held a coffee morning in the Parish Centre to raise funds for Young Vincentians including the Mini-Vinnies. As usual, our parishioners were very supportive and over £100 was raised. Our President recently addressed a Mini-Vinnies group at St. Joseph’s School on Canvey Island. There are leaflets at the back of the Church about Young Vincentian groups with full details about membership.

Twenty-fourth Sunday of the Year
Dear friends in Christ
The Gospel of St Luke is often called The Gospel of Mercy and this is a happy coincidence for this Year of Mercy which concludes in November. Many of the parables in his Gospel refer to the infinite mercy of God and we have some examples in the Gospel reading this Sunday. The central figure in these parables is God Himself. He does everything He can to recover His children who are lost. He is the Good Shepherd who goes in search of the lost sheep. God is also represented in the woman who loses the coin and sweeps out the house in order to find it. The incredible mercy of God is our motivation for repentance and the place where this is definitely found is in Confession, the Sacrament of Mercy. In this special Year of Mercy, if we are still hesitating, let us approach the mercy of God in this Sacrament with joy and confidence. We have only to take one small step towards Our Lord and He comes the rest of the way; we have only to confess our failings and we infallibly hear the words: Yours sins are forgiven, go in peace. Let Saint Luke’s Gospel touch us especially deeply in this Jubilee Year, so that renewed by God’s mercy, we may experience the meaning of what it is to live in the freedom of the Children of God.
This Monday I shall continue with my second of the Talks for non-Catholics on the Faith with some thoughts about the Mass. These Talks could be helpful and informative for anyone - family members or friends - who would like to discover more about our beautiful Catholic faith and who may even be considering entering the Church in the future.
September is the Society of the St Vincent de Paul Awareness month. This weekend one of the members of our local conference will be making an appeal on behalf of the Society. Please support the SVP as generously as you can for their important charitable work within our Parish Family.

Carmelites
The next Carmelite meeting is on Saturday the 24th September. We have a quiet time in the Church at 2pm followed by the Rosary at 2.15pm. We then go to the Parish Centre Newman Room for the meeting. This commences with a cup of tea, talk about our spiritual growth and how we can help one another spiritually, we then have Lectio divina, the meeting usually finishes by 5pm. All parishioners are welcome for all or part of the meeting, why don’t you come and see what we do?

Scripture Group
Fr Con Joyce’s Scripture Group will next meet in the Parish Centre 8pm-9pm on Thursday, 22nd September. Fr. Con will be talking about the prophets starting with Isaiah. These meetings are held to give us a better understanding of the Bible, to encourage us to read it and so help us to come closer to Jesus in our daily lives as Christians. All welcome.
Serving the Homeless
Sincere thanks to all the parishioners who supported our Summer Raffle and the Walk/Quiz. £1,167.50 was raised from the raffle; £370 was raised from the Walk Quiz and all this money will be used to support our local homelessness projects.
A list of the raffle prize winners is in the porch.
Our next event is an Italian Tapas Evening with Magic by Paul Clancy. Additionally Elizabeth Upsher will sing some Italian operetta songs. This will be held in the Parish Centre on Saturday 22nd October at 7.00 pm. Tickets cost £10 each and are available from Jo Ronan 474062, Nina 472536 or Theresa 335122. Please bring your own drinks for the evening.
