Diocesan Centenary Pilgrimage to Walsingham Saturday 22nd July

Diocesan Centenary Pilgrimage to Walsingham Saturday 22nd July

The main celebration of our Centenary this year will take place at Walsingham and will be a Diocesan-wide event.  There will be no Vigil Masses in the Diocese that evening in order to encourage as many as possible to go on this pilgrimage.  Two coaches will travel from our Parish at a cost of £10 per adult, £5 per child.  The coach will leave Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 8am and depart from Walsingham no later than 5pm.

If you would like to book a ticket for the coach please call in at the Parish Office as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.  Monies should be paid at the time of booking.  The Parish Office is open from 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday.  Alternatively, put your name and cash/cheque (payable to Our Lady of Lourdes) in an envelope and post it through the Presbytery door.

The Ascension of The Lord

Dear Friends in Christ

Forty days after His Resurrection, Jesus gathered the disciples together and bade them a final farewell; this is the moment of His Ascension into Heaven which we celebrate this weekend. It was a moment tinged with joy and sadness: joy because Jesus returns to His rightful place with God the Father in Heaven; and sadness because we no longer have His physical presence with us.  However, Our Lord remains with us in the Blessed Eucharist, which is a real and abiding presence: in the Mass and in the Tabernacle, where He dwells continually; it is there that he awaits us, calling and welcoming us. In a Sermon for this feast the English convert and writer, Monsignor Ronald Knox, has some lines which I always find uplifting for this Day: Among all the mysteries of our Lord's life, this is the only one which makes you think how nice it was for our Lord, instead of thinking how nice it was for us. We rejoice, for his sake, that he has left this miserable world behind, to enjoy eternity; we rejoice, for our sakes, because in him humanity has stormed the citadels of heaven; because he, who once beckoned us to share in his sufferings, beckons us now to share in his glory.

Next weekend - Pentecost - is the birthday of the Holy Church. It is the traditional day for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please pray for the group of young adults in our Parish Family who will be Confirmed during the 11.30am Mass next Sunday: for their Sponsors, godparents and families that, they may be faithful to what they promise and receive what is promised to them.

With every blessing.

Lourdes Fund

There has been a small Fund in the Parish to assist young people going on pilgrimage to Lourdes for some years now. It was first endowed by the late Bishop Patrick Casey and has practically dried-up.  If there are any groups or individuals who through fundraising or donations would like to continue to endow this Fund then please make any donations payable to the Parish of Leigh-on-Sea and designated it for the Lourdes Fund.  Many thanks.

Annual Collection for our Sick and Retired Clergy

The Annual Collection for our Sick and Retired Clergy is due to be taken on the weekend of 17th/18th June this year.  The Administrators of the Fund take this opportunity to thank Parishes for their continued generosity.

The Sick & Retired Clergy Fund is part of the Diocesan Charity which helps and supports our retired and sick clergy.  As a Charity we rely on the generosity of the Parishes and individual donations to keep the Fund in a healthy state.  Another valuable means is by including a bequest in your Will; a Form of Bequest can be found on page 36 of the Brentwood Diocesan Directory.  Your generosity through donations, the annual collection and bequests is greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your continued help and support.

Meal at East - 29th June, 2017

The Kwasnica fundraising meal at East (Alexandra Rd, Southend) is back!  Pleasejoin us for delicious 'all you can eat' Chinese food. Tickets cost £13 (excluding drinks) and there will be a raffle.  We are raising money to go to Lourdes with the BCYS (Brentwood Catholic Youth Service).  In addition to attending planned activities with the other young pilgrims, we will be assisting the sick, elderly and disabled pilgrims by pushing wheelchairs and offering companionship.  Although physically and emotionally challenging it is a very rewarding experience.  In order to go, we need to raise the money to pay for our travel and accommodation.  For information about tickets & raffle donations, please contact Amy on 07847517148.

Message from the Bishop

I ask all the people of Brentwood Diocese to remember in their prayers particularly this week-end all the people of Manchester and beyond who have been caught up in the recent tragedy.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the dead and injured; their family and friends.

At this time it is important to stand together and always to seek love before hatred.  The response of the families of the people of Manchester has been a great witness for us all – in our turn we need to continue to support our friends in Manchester in whatever way we can.
