Journey of Faith (RCIA)
A series of informal talks, designed to give an insight into the teachings and traditions of the Catholic church, continues on Monday 21st January at 8pm in the Parish Centre with Journey of Faith (Baptism & Confirmation). You are welcome to attend some or all of these talks; if you would like more information please speak to Fr Kevin.

Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes - Monday 22nd July to Saturday 27th July 2019
Five nights (full board) travelling from Stansted to Lourdes with Ryanair and staying at the Grand Moderne Hotel will cost £665 per pilgrim (this includes one 20g suitcase per passenger, plus one hand-luggage bag). Outbound flight departs at 13.10/arrives 16.10 and return flight departs Lourdes at 11.10am/arrives 12.10pm. Please collect an information sheet/booking form from the Parish office.

Dear Friends in christ
In today's feast we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus by John in the waters of the Jordan. Though He Himself had no stain to be washed away, He wished to submit Himself to this rite as He submitted Himself to the other requirements of the Law. As a human being He submitted Himself to the laws that ruled and governed the lives of the people of Israel who had been chosen by God to prepare the way for the Redeemer. By His baptism Jesus left for us the sacrament of Christian baptism, directly instituted by Christ. In baptism we receive faith and grace. The day we were baptised was the most important day of our lives. Before we received baptism we were outside the locked gates of Paradise, unable to produce even the smallest supernatural fruit.

Today our prayer is one of thanksgiving to God for this totally undeserved gift and to rejoice in the countless good things He has lavished upon us. As Saint Irenaeus wrote in the second century: Thanksgiving is the very first emotion that should be born in us in response to our baptism; the second is joy. Never should we think of our baptism without deep feelings of thanksgiving. Baptism brings into action something greater than any other good: grace and faith, perhaps, eternal salvation. We have to thank our parents and godparents who brought us, when maybe just a few days or weeks after we were born, to receive this first of the Christian sacraments.
Traditionally on this Sunday we renew the vows and promises of our baptism. It is also the Sunday when those babies baptised in the last year in our Parish receive a special blessing and the Miraculous Medal during the evening Service and Benediction. May God bless them and all of you!

Reverse Advent Calendar
The Live Simply Group would like to thank all those who responded so generously to this appeal. 26 completed backpacks have been donated and distributed via the RC prison chaplain to those who, having completed their sentence, leave prison with no home to go to. Other gifts of money, toiletries and clothing will be well used by the Churches Winter Night shelters.
Costa/Greggs gift cards can be an excellent way to help those on the streets without enabling an addiction problem. Thank you once again.
BCYS Summer Lourdes Pilgrimage 20th – 27th July 2019
Join the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service in Lourdes this Summer as we travel alongside the diocese, assisting the elderly and infirm on their annual pilgrimage.
Alongside this we also run a retreat, daily Masses and excursions for the young people, as well as experiencing the Lourdes Torchlight Procession and Blessed Sacrament Procession.
Places will be allocated to ensure as many parishes and schools as possible from the diocese are represented and applications will remain open until 31st January 2019. Where we receive a large number from one school or parish, places will be allocated on a “first come, first served” basis. Please be aware, this event is always heavily oversubscribed.

Lourdes Ladies Group
Our next Meeting is at 10.30am on Thursday 17th January when we welcome Guest Speaker Mr. Keith Price, a local from Great Wakering, who will be sharing his gardening experience along with some beautiful slides. All gardeners and non-gardeners are welcome!
Please note: This Meeting is an opportunity to put your name forward for our planned visit to the Houses of Parliament in May. Numbers are limited so don't miss out.
Sacred Heart Winter Night Shelter
Thank you for your very generous donations to the Winter Night Shelter. We do not need any more warm clothes, thank you, but are in great need of new small/medium sized ladies and mens socks and pants.
There is a box in the sacristy – marked ‘Sacred Heart Night Shelter’ - where donations can be placed. Thank you in anticipation for any help you can give!

OLOL Parish SVP Conference
Our parish St Vincent de Paul (SVP) “Conference” has twelve active members with an additional four parishioners currently applying to join! The main work of the Conference is visiting the elderly and infirm at home, in care and nursing homes as well as, when the need arises, in hospital. The Conference provides financial assistance (as funds allow) to individuals and families experiencing hardship as well as assisting the housebound with smaller practical tasks, e.g. shopping, transport, changing a light bulb etc. Members contribute to the work of Winter Night Shelters provided by local churches. Our Conference has Masses said for the repose of the souls of beneficiaries who have died and seeks to be present at their Requiem masses. We are indebted to fellow-parishioners for their generosity which enables the Conference to help others in need. Our annual SVP ‘Awareness Month’ appeal held last September (2018), as well as generous donations from parishioners via the SVP box at the back of the church, raised £1147.00. Some of this funding was used as follows:
£600 to the India SVP Disaster Relief Fund to help families devastated by the Kerala floods.
£300 to purchase clothing and toiletries for homeless men and women using the Sacred Heart Parish, Southend, night shelter.
£200 to assist a person with special needs go on pilgrimage to Lourdes.
£150 worth of supermarket vouchers for young ex-offenders resident over Christmas in the Southend refuge centre.
A Christmas afternoon tea was arranged in the parish centre for elderly parishioners on 8th December 2018. Gifts were given to our guests!

White Flower Appeal
The Society for the Protection of Unborn children (SPUC) will be holding its annual appeal this weekend. SPUC is currently campaigning to stop the decriminalisation of abortion, which means taking abortion outside the law. This is the most dangerous threat to unborn children and their mothers in decades.
Please be as generous as you can to help us defeat this latest attack on unborn babies and their mothers, and to stop abortion getting even worse in this country by decriminalisation.
