OLL Ladies Group
Welcome back after the long summer break and we are starting off with a very interesting talk by Sarah Nevada about the work of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, so let's give Sarah a very warm welcome. The Bethlehem Nativity Group
A missionary from Bethlehem,The Holy Land will visit us on the weekend of 7th-8th September to briefly talk about the Holy Land and sell religious articles made out of Olive Wood from the Holy Land to help and support the poor Christian families, (“when you help the poor you help our Lord”).
First Holy Communion 2020
If you have a child going into Year 3 in September and would like them to make their First Holy Communion in 2020, please complete the on-line Registration Form available from the Parish Website under Sacraments and return it to the Parish office no later than Friday 6th September.
There will be a parent’s meeting on Thursday 26th September at 8pm in the Parish Centre for those parents who have registered their child for First Holy Communion in 2020.
Pivotal Players - New from Bishop Barron
There will be a screening of the NEW instalment in Bishop Barron’s best-selling ‘Pivotal Players’ series, which is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilisation.
Series 2 of this ground-breaking series will be shown on Monday evenings at 8pm in the Parish Centre with two incredible saints from the fourth and fifth centuries: St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Benedict of Nursia.

We come this weekend to the end of the holiday season, as many of us prepare to return to school and work after the Summer vacation. In the Gospel of this Sunday Jesus tells us to enter by the narrow door…This reminds us that the road to Heaven is not a broad and easy one but rather a path which will involve sacrifice and effort. Both during the last week and in the coming week, we celebrate a variety of Saints who show us how to live discipleship of Christ by radical love.

Both during the last week and in the coming week, we celebrate a variety of Saints who show us how to live discipleship of Christ by radical love. One of these is St John the Baptist, whose beheading we celebrate on Thursday. St John was the first of the New Testament Saints, and was a cousin of our Lord. St John is the only Saint in the calendar who is honoured by both his birth and death; because as Jesus says of him: Of those born of women there is none greater than John the Baptist. Since the time of St John countless souls have given their lives in faithfulness to Christ. Most likely God will not ask for our martyrdom by blood as a witness to the Faith. Our normal duty, however, when done with deep love, can be a constant sacrifice. This form of ‘martyrdom’ requires no less sacrifice than the giving of our life-blood. St John completely surrendered his life for Christ, as one of his first disciples. As St Bede comments: There is no doubt
St John suffered prison and chains as a forerunner of our Redeemer. Though Herod did not demand that he deny Christ he did try to oblige the Baptist to remain silent about the truth. We can therefore affirm the precursor did suffer martyrdom. Since death was ever near at hand through the inescapable necessities of nature, the Martyr considered it a blessing to embrace it for acknowledging Christ’s name in return for the reward of eternal life.

Silent Weekend Retreat
From 6pm Friday 11th October until 2pm on Sunday 13th October 2019 at Sion Catholic Community for Evangelism, Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood, Essex CM15 9BX. Guest Speaker: Canon David Oakley.
Our theme this year is 'Silence & the Scriptures'. We chose this theme in line with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales who have designated 2020 as ‘The God Who Speaks’: A Year of the Word to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Verbum Domini – Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation on ‘The Word of the Lord’, and the 1600th anniversary of death of St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin. 2020 will be a year of celebrating, living and sharing God’s word. This silent weekend retreat is a great opportunity to take time out with the Lord in prayer and reflection. 40-Hours Adoration, Silence and Prayer form part of the weekend.

Leigh Collection for HARP (World Homeless Day)
Southend’s Leading Homeless Charity HARP, have a street collection in conjunction with World Homeless Day on Saturday, 5th October 2019, 10am to 4pm, in Leigh-on-Sea at the junction of Broadway West and Elm Road. Barleylands Fun Walk - Brentwood Catholic Children's Society
Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society is inviting families to join us at the Barleylands Fun Walk on Sunday 8th September 2019 to increase awareness of our work. This is a great fun, family event with a choice of walks on the Barleylands site in Billericay, the longest being no more than 2 miles and a shorter walk which is suitable for children & toddlers. There will be stalls serving cakes/biscuits and ice-cream available from 12pm and the community walk will start at 12.45pm & finish around 2pm. This is an ideal opportunity for families or parish groups to get together and have a fun afternoon while raising much needed funds for BCCS’. Health & Safety Advisor - Full Time/Permanent - Brentwood
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Health & Safety Advisor to join our Team in delivering high quality health and safety advice and support to the Diocese of Brentwood.
This is a varied and interesting role providing support to the Diocese across a range of health and safety activities. We are looking for an experienced, qualified and proactive health and safety practitioner to promote a culture of ownership of health and safety and risk management throughout the Diocese. This will include working in close collaboration with Parishes throughout the Diocese to promote good practice in risk management and risk reduction, the provision of support and guidance for health and safety and facilitate local ownership of risk and safety issues.
The successful candidate will be accountable to the Diocesan Property Consultant and will assist in the ongoing development and implementation of the Diocese’s health and safety management system in order to foster a proactive and compliant safety culture.
As a team player, you will be able to prioritise your work in order to meet deadlines. Previous experience of working in a health and safety environment is essential. We are looking for someone who can work on their own initiative and has strong interpersonal skills.
