We begin the month of October by reminding ourselves that this month is dedicated to Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary. It was on 7th October 1570 that the Christian forces at the Battle of Lepanto were victorious over the Turkish forces. Pope St Pius V attributed this victory to the intercession of Our Blessed Lady, invoked through the praying of the Holy Rosary. Our love for this devotion must be constantly renewed. Given the grave crises we find in our world, we need the intercession of Mary more than ever: for unity and harmony within the Church (as the Amazonian Synod begins), peace in the world and reconciliation in family life.
Dear Friends in Christ

Given the grave crises we find in our world, we need the intercession of Mary more than ever: for unity and harmony within the Church (as the Amazonian Synod begins), peace in the world and reconciliation in family life. There are always many reason for us to take-up our Rosary beads and pray this powerful prayer. At the end of the Rosary, if we pray the Litany of Our Lady (of Loretto) we call to mind the many titles faithful Christians have given her down the centuries: Mother of the Church, Help of Christians, Queen of Families, Queen of Peace…. Please make a special effort this month to pray for some of these intentions, especially within your families, that God may be praised in the Blessed Trinity, through the Heart of His Blessed Mother, Mary.
Next Sunday will see the Canonisation of John Henry Cardinal Newman. Many Catholics are travelling to Rome for this historical and much anticipated occasion. Next weekend I hope to say some words about this new Saint - for England and for the Church - the first non-martyr Saint since the Reformation. Pray that through the intercession of John Henry, our country may recover the Faith of our Fathers, that the Truth of the Catholic Faith may be seen ever more clearly, and that he will inspire us with a new vigour and enthusiasm, so that we may bring about a new springtime for the Church in our land!

Youth Gather 2019; an amazing encounter for our young people (aged school year 9-13) - 26th & 27th October 2019
As well as all the outward bound activities over the weekend (zip wire, high ropes, archery and much more) at Mersea Island (near Colchester, Essex), we are delighted to be joined by a panel of “BCYS alumni.” Part of the BCYS over the last 10-15 years, this interesting group includes a strategist in the Home Office, a Metropolitan Police Sergeant with a very special role, a press officer at HMRC, dealing with tax evasion and crime, a classroom teacher and a school lead practitioner. Two of the panel are married to each other, and one is engaged. Come and hear them tell their stories, and share how they navigate the (sometimes very difficult) balance of decisions in their working life and living their Catholic faith. It will be a fascinating encounter for teenagers considering their own pathways in life. Coach outing to Cambridge

School Admission Forms for Primary & Secondary Schools
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Schools for the next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. We will provide the appropriate form. Please come to the Parish Centre for these on Friday, 18th October between 6pm and 8pm or Sunday, 20th October between 3pm and 4pm.
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.
Journey of Faith (RCIA)
A series of informal talks, designed to give an insight into the teachings and traditions of the Catholic church, starts on Monday14th October at 8pm in the Parish Centre with Journey of Faith (Who is God & Our Desire for God). You are welcome to attend some or all of these talks; if you would like more information please speak to Fr Kevin.
Altar Serving
We would like to recruit some more Altar Servers: anyone post-First Holy Communion age who would like to be trained to serve Holy Mass, or adult servers for weekdays. Please give your names to Father Kevin or send to the parish Office.
Missio APF
Pope Francis has called the whole Church to observe the Extraordinary Month of Mission this October 2019. The Missio magazine for Autumn 2019 is a Special Edition and I have many extra copies, plus Prayer Cards, which I will leave at the back of the Church. There are Daily reflections in the magazine so whether you have a red box or not, I urge you all to take one and pray for the Missions during this special month. Thank you.
