200 Club

The 200 Club continues to provide funds to support the running of the Parish. During the last financial year, thanks to the parishioners who subscribe to the 200 Club, donations from the 200 Club funds were made to the restoration of the reredos and the repair of the bells.

However, during the last 18 months, the number of parishioners supporting the 200 Club has fallen to 162, a shortfall of 38.

We are currently looking for new members. The subscription is £5 per month, either by cash, cheque or direct debit. If you would like to join, please fill in a form which can be found at the back of the church or ring Linda Wall on
01702 558217.

Recently, there have been several occasions where a monthly prize has been won but where a change of address has not been notified to Linda, resulting in cheques going missing. It is very important that changes of address should be notified both to the office and to Linda.

Upcoming Events for Serving the Homeless

Flower Festival 2021

We will be holding a Flower Festival in OLL church again this year on 11th September. The Theme will be “I AM” (as in I Am the Good Shepherd; the Light of the World; The Way, Truth, & Life etc.) This was the theme that we had chosen for last year, but due to the pandemic it did not take place. The Festival will again coincide with the Leigh Art Trail.  We would like to expand the displays to include Art, Photography, Needlework, Woodwork etc., to illustrate the theme. Any donations will go towards ‘Serving the Homeless’ projects.

So we are calling all parishioners to help us to create a beautiful and prayerful event to be shared with our community.

For those interested a list of all the quotations will be available. You can email me at:  mcronan@btinternet.com

You have four months to get creative!

We are also holding a Summer Raffle to raise funds so that we can continue to contribute to HARP and YMCA projects. Tickets for our ‘Hamper Bonanza’ are now on sale, with the draw taking place at the beginning of September. Tickets can be purchased from any of our Committee members.

CAFOD

Thank you for your generous donations to CAFOD’s Family Fast Day during Lent. We featured Marian and her son Svondo in Zimbabwe in Lent 2018. The community vegetable garden that your donations helped provide is growing well and during the pandemic the family has survived on the vegetables. Your support has also helped to provide soap and handwashing stations in the garden and in family homes. This is just one of many long-term development projects that CAFOD has funded with the money from that Fast Day. Thank you for your steadfast support.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

Dear friends in Christ

The earliest Christian iconography depicts Jesus as The Good Shepherd.

Dear friends in Christ

The earliest Christian iconography depicts Jesus as The Good Shepherd. This gentle image of the One who always leads us back to the fold, is the image which the Liturgy puts before our eyes on this particular Sunday of Eastertide. Psalm 23—perhaps one of the best known and loved of these prayers—expresses the confident optimism of the Christian soul as this representation of Jesus carries us home to the House of The Father.

By a long established tradition, on this Sunday we pray for the Shepherds of the Church: Her Bishops and Priests. Also, for vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. Remember to implore God to send us Shepherds who have the Heart of Jesus Christ; faithful priests who will bring us the grace of God in the Sacraments and in the Word of Truth. Perhaps we think that priests will just materialise…that when I leave this Parish there will be another to replace me; please God, there will be! But in the meantime we have to invest in the formation of our young people, so that the seeds of the Faith are sown and that when God calls someone to follow Him in priestly or consecrated life, they have the support of their families and of their Parish Family. Such vocations do grow on trees! I thank God for the witness of the priests I knew when growing-up, and for the lived-out Faith of my family and friends who constantly encouraged me on my path to the Priesthood. It is the same for all of us whom God has chosen and called. We are ever conscious of those words of Our Lord: You did not choose me, but I choose you.

Our Diocesan Vocations Team has produced some prayer cards which are available for you to collect from the back of church. You will find further helpful resources on the Vocations website: brentwoodvocations.co.uk

This week we begin Mary’s Month of May: let us go to her, so that assisted with her Mothers love, we may live our Christian vocation with complete fidelity to Jesus her Son.

I wish you all a blessed week ahead!

Msgr kevin Hale

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

This Sunday is the Good Shepherd Sunday, or the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The second collection supports the education and formation of our seminarians. We have nine seminarians in formation for our diocese at this time. At the Beda in Rome we have the Rev. Deacon Tony Grant who is to be ordained a priest in the summer. At Oscott College in Birmingham we have the Rev. Deacon Michael Barwick who is to be ordained in the summer also. Also at Oscott is Alexander Johnson, Jonathan Burden, Frank Westcott and Alex Wyndham. At Allen Hall in Westminster we have Damien Wade who is to be ordained deacon this year and also at Allen Hall are Matúš Meleg and Moses Itene, please pray for them all today and in the future.

Today you can take a prayer card as you leave church to help you pray for vocations, or you will find a copy below, and there will be an opportunity to have a mass said for vocations if you would like to. If you would like to have a mass said for vocations then please take an envelope and indicate how many masses you would like to be said, write your name as the donor and specify any special date you would prefer and give it to your parish priest.

Today, on this Fourth Sunday of Easter, the Church focuses our attention on Jesus, the Good Shepherd. The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd is one of the most beloved images of Our Lord in the New Testament. Jesus is the Good Shepherd because he lays down his life for his sheep; Jesus is the Good Shepherd because he knows each of his sheep by name. And those who belong to his flock hear his voice and follow him.

On this Good Shepherd Sunday the Church summons us to pray that the Good Shepherd will send others to pastor and watch over his flock. And so today is a day of prayer for vocations: vocations to the priesthood and vocations to religious life. On this day, the Church invites us to pray that the Lord of the Harvest will call young men and women to dedicate their lives to spreading the Gospel as priests and religious.

Do you know a young man who might be a good priest? If so, invite him to consider exploring the possibility of becoming a priest? It is not that young people are uninterested in dedicating their lives to God. I have met many who are. But they have never been invited to consider the possibility of doing so. But what if you reached out to them and suggested the possibility? What if you planted the seed that might lead to a vocation to priesthood or religious life?

If you are a young person reading this, ask yourself what you want to do with the precious gift of life that God has given you. How do you want to live the rest of your life? What is really and truly important to you? Do you have a deep love for Christ and the Church? Do you have a passion to proclaim the good news of the gospel to others? Are you interested in a life of serving others for the sake of the gospel? If so, being a priest or a religious sister may be a way in which you can fulfil your deepest desires. For when all is said and done, our deepest desire is for God, and it is only when we satisfy this desire that we will be truly fulfilled.

On the Good Shepherd Sunday, pray for the priests and religious who have served you throughout your life. Encourage your children and grandchildren and other young people to consider if God is calling them to a life of priestly or religious service. Pray that God will give the Church faithful priests and religious who will give of themselves generously and tirelessly for the sake of the Gospel.

Prayer For Vocations

Lord Jesus Christ,

You have chosen the Apostles and their successors,
the Bishops and Priests of the Catholic Church, to preach
the true faith throughout the whole world. We earnestly beseech You to choose from among us in our parishes, priests and religious who will gladly spend their entire lives to make You better known and loved.

Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us. Immaculate Heart of Mary pray for us. St Joseph pray for us.
St John Vianney pray for us.
