Sunday - It Is Our Day

Statement from the Catholic Bishops of England

On 19th July, the current legislative powers which assist the mitigations against the covid-19 virus transmission will be rescinded by HM Government. Nevertheless, there will be an encouragement to personal and corporate responsibility in this area; as the Prime Minister said in his most recent statement “The pandemic is not over.” Even without this legislation in place, the Church in England and Wales will be adopting a cautious approach to capacity and activity within our buildings, especially at corporate acts of worship.

We are mindful of the certain fact that the Covid-19 virus is still circulating in society. Vaccines provide genuine protection against the worst effects of the virus, yet we recognise the legitimate fear on the part of some who otherwise desire to gather for Holy Mass. It is our continuing judgement, therefore, that it is not possible at the present time for all of the faithful to attend Mass on a Sunday thus fulfilling their duty to God.

It is hoped that it will be possible for all Catholics in England and Wales to fulfil this most important Church precept, that of the Sunday Obligation, by the First Sunday in Advent 2021. In the meantime, all Catholics are asked to do their best to participate in the celebration of the weekly Sunday Mass and to reflect deeply on the centrality of Sunday worship in the life of the Church.

In April, following our Plenary Assembly, we offered a reflection on the experience of the extraordinary long months of the pandemic. It was titled The Day of the Lord. We also began to look at the way forward. We spoke about the important invitation to restore the Sunday Mass to its rightful centrality in our lives. We asked for a rekindling in our hearts of a yearning for the Real Presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, as our response to the total, sacrificial love that Jesus has for us. We said: “The Eucharist should be the cause of our deepest joy, our highest manner of offering thanks to God and for seeking his mercy and love. We need to make it the foundation stone of our lives.”

May this continue to be our striving during these coming months as we journey back to the full celebration of our Sunday Mass and our renewed observance of The Day of the Lord.

Flower Festival - 11th September 2021

Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to contribute to the Flower festival this year. The Theme is “I AM” (as in I Am the Good Shepherd; the Light of the World; The Way, Truth, & Life etc.) This was the theme that we had chosen for last year, but due to the pandemic it did not take place. The Festival will again, hopefully, coincide with the Leigh Art Trail.  I am pleased to say that we have already have some Art, Photography and Needlework, as well as flower arrangements promised by parishioners to illustrate the themes. We need more people to take part, particularly to do flower arrangements.

So we are calling all parishioners to help us to create a beautiful and prayerful event to be shared with our community.

Any donations collected on the day will go towards ‘Serving the Homeless’ projects.

For those interested a list of all the quotations will be available. You can email me at:  mcronan@btinternet.com

Please let me know if you are planning to take part. You have 2 months left to get creative!

We are also holding a Summer Raffle to raise funds so that we can continue to contribute to HARP and YMCA projects. Tickets for our ‘Hamper Bonanza’ are now on sale, with the draw taking place at the beginning of September. Tickets can be purchased from any of our Committee members.

Jo Ronan (Chair, Serving the Homeless)

CAFOD Brentwood

This year, the UK will host the largest gathering of world leaders ever to take place on British soil: the ‘COP26’ climate talks. As Prime Minister, Boris Johnson must push world leaders to show the ambition we need to keep temperature rises below the disastrous 1.5-degree threshold. Please urge the Prime Minister to put people hardest hit at the heart of COP26 climate talks and sign this online petition: https://action.cafod.org.uk/page/73304/petition/1

Catholicism Post-Covid

Here is a link to a very helpful (free) book as we move out of the pandemic. It gives lots of insights as to how we can rekindle our Faith after this dramatic period in our history. Above all, it describes ways that we can rekindle our Faith as we start to come back to Mass and the Sacraments.

BCYS

We have been working hard at the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service to be able to welcome Clergy, Catechists and young people back to events this year as restrictions begin to ease, and with much hope about what is possible in the Autumn.

We have some key dates to save in your diaries, including our Autumn Youth Gather, Catechist Training Day and our upcoming Virtual Youth Masses.

Most excitingly (at least we think so!) is the "Lourdes at your Local" event, which we will be hosting in place of our usual pilgrimage to Lourdes in July. We will be travelling to different parishes around the diocese to celebrate Mass and be able to gather in person in a way that has not been possible for much too long. At the end of this week, we are also welcoming those aged 18+ (School Year 13 and above) to gather together at Walsingham House at Abbotswick, with Mass celebrated by Bishop Alan and followed by a picnic in the beautiful grounds of our retreat centre.

If you would like any more information about any of these events, please click the links to visit the website events page, or please do email gabriellafusi@dioceseofbrentwood.org

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the second reading of the Mass this Sunday we hear the words of Saint Paul: He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

Dear friends in Christ

In the second reading of the Mass this Sunday we hear the words of Saint Paul: He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. Through Baptism and Confirmation all the Christian Faithful belong to a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people. We all have the vocation, therefore, to seek holiness because of our consecration in Christ. From the ranks of the Faithful, all of whom have this common priesthood, some have been called by God, through the sacrament of Holy Orders, to exercise the ministerial priesthood. This second priesthood builds upon the first one, but they are essentially different. By means of the consecration received in Holy Orders, the priest becomes an instrument of Jesus Christ, to whom he offers his entire being, in order to bring the grace of redemption to all mankind. I am reminded of this enormous grace of priestly consecration in these days, since it is traditionally Ordination season! Last Sunday Fr Joseph Bailham OP, was ordained a priest for the Dominican Order (he is a native of Stock in our Diocese). Fr Callum Young from East Ham was ordained two weeks ago in Newry for the Neo Catechumenate. This weekend Fr Michael Barwick (Springfield Parish) was ordained in our Cathedral; and on Friday 23rd, Tony Grant (Forest Gate) will also be ordained for our Diocese. I ask you to hold these young men in your daily prayers, that wherever they are serving the Church, they will do so with single-mindedness and faithfulness so that God may use them as instruments for the salvation of many souls. As our Schools prepare for the Summer break, we wish all our students and staff a well-deserved holiday and pray that the coming academic year will be less fraught than the last!

God bless you all in this week ahead!

Msgr Kevin Hale
