Flower Festival - 11th September 2021

Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to contribute to the Flower festival this year. The Theme is “I AM” (as in I Am the Good Shepherd; the Light of the World; The Way, Truth, & Life etc.) This was the theme that we had chosen for last year, but due to the pandemic it did not take place. The Festival will again, hopefully, coincide with the Leigh Art Trail.  I am pleased to say that we have already have some Art, Photography and Needlework, as well as flower arrangements promised by parishioners to illustrate the themes. We need more people to take part, particularly to do flower arrangements.

So we are calling all parishioners to help us to create a beautiful and prayerful event to be shared with our community.

Any donations collected on the day will go towards ‘Serving the Homeless’ projects.

For those interested a list of all the quotations will be available. You can email me at:  mcronan@btinternet.com

Please let me know if you are planning to take part.

Jo Ronan (Chair, Serving the Homeless)

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear friends in Christ

This year we have the opportunity to celebrate the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sunday.

Dear friends in Christ

This year we have the opportunity to celebrate the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sunday. Since the fifth century, the church has held implicitly the belief in the Assumption of the Blessed Mother; body and soul, into Heaven. It can be deduced from the Liturgy, from pious documents and the writings of the Fathers and the Doctors of the Church. Popular piety and art have frequently depicted Mary in the midst of clouds carried aloft by the Angels. Saint Thomas Aquinas sees, in these angelic interventions on behalf of those who have left the earth and are already on the way to heaven, a manifestation of the reverence the angels and all creatures render the glorified body of Mary. The Preface for the Mass of this Day summarises the dogma of Mary’s Assumption:

For today the Virgin Mother of God was assumed into heaven as the beginning and image of your Church’s coming to perfection and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people; rightly you would not allow her to see the corruption of the tomb since from her own body she marvellously brought forth your incarnate Son, the Author of all life.

The Assumption of Mary is a wonderful reminder of our own resurrection. It is made possible through Christ rising from the dead. Today on this Solemnity, our prayers are full of confidence. Our advocate rose up to heaven, so she will arrange for our salvation as Mother of the Judge, the Mother of Mercy (St Bernard). One day, if we are faithful, we will contemplate Jesus and Mary whom we have invoked so many times in this life. Wishing you every blessing on this most lovely of Mary’s feast days!

Msgr Kevin Hale

Attending Holy Mass Post-Lockdown

As we begin to move out of the restrictions that have been imposed upon us over these last months, let us all be mindful of others when we come to church and attend Holy Mass. There will be many members of the Parish Family who are still feeling nervous, reticent and vulnerable. Although restrictions have been lifted, we must all remain prudent about how we act and inter-act within the confines of the church; we must all take personal responsibility for the way we act. Even if masks and social-distancing are no longer obligatory, there will be many who will wish to continue adhering to these precautions; and please respect the space of others. Singing in church is permissible and the Confessional may be used for the Sacrament of Penance. There is no reason why we should not show each other a sign of peace, albeit in a non-tactile way; i.e. a bow or smile acknowledging our neighbour, unless we are with family members. Obviously Communion from the Chalice is not possible because of the serious risk of infection. A reminder that, if you are receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, please come up last in the line. Booking a place at Mass is no longer necessary, nor the stewarding. Our Bishops have stated that the Sunday Obligation will be reinstated as from the First Sunday of Advent.
