Applications to Catholic Schools
If any families are applying to a Catholic School for the next academic year, they may wish to have a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish. You should only request one if you are a practising Catholic and these are issued by the Parish Office; and can be had after weekday Masses on Thursdays and Fridays.
Journey in Faith (RCIA)
We will begin once again the Journey in Faith sessions on Monday, 4th October. These evenings are for those wishing to discover more about the Catholic Faith with a view to Reception into the Church. If you know anyone who is interested in learning more about our Faith and wishing to become Catholic, please direct them to Fr Kevin or these evenings. They will be in the Parish Centre—Bernadette Room—and begin at 8pm.
OLL Ladies Group
OLL Ladies Group next meets on Thursday 7th October from 10.15 am. All women in the Parish very welcome to come and meet friends old and new and enjoy tea, coffee and cake and a fun raffle.
Our guest speaker this week is a well known parishioner, Anne Emerson. Many of you will have seen some of Anne’s beautiful work at the recent flower festival in our Church and she has very kindly agreed to show us more of her patchwork quilting, along with a talk on this topic.
Please do come along and support Anne and enjoy an interesting morning. Subs are only £1.00 per meeting.
The Thresholds of Hope Questions
THE THRESHOLDS OF HOPE QUESTIONS are a series of talks for adults who want to grow in understanding and confidence when questioned or speaking about their Catholic Faith. The talks and discussion take place on Zoom from 4.00 - 5.00 pm on a Sunday afternoon.
The next talks will be on the 3rd and 10th October and the question being explored is "What does it mean to talk about God?” Fr Mark Reilly, parish priest of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Wickford, will consider this question. St Bernard's High School - Year 6 Open Mornings
We will be holding Year 6 Open Mornings in October on the following dates,
by appointment only:
Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th, Thursday 7th & Friday 8th October.
There will be 40 minute tours given between 9.15am - 10am & 10am - 10.45am.

In the first reading of the Mass this weekend the Old Testament Book of Numbers recounts how Moses asked the Lord to give his spirit to other elders of the tribe. Moses did not feel that he had sufficient strength to carry all the responsibility by himself. So the Lord took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. These men congregated at the Tent and began to prophesy right away. Joshua asked Moses to forbid them from doing so. Moses responded: If only the whole people of the Lord would be prophets, and the Lord gave his spirit to them all! The Gospel for today's Mass concerns a somewhat similar event. John approaches Jesus to report that the apostles have seen a man casting out demons in the name of Jesus. Since he does not belong to their circle, the apostles try to stop him. But Jesus corrects John by saying: You must not stop him: no one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me.
Every one of us is called to extend the kingdom of Christ. Every situation in our world is a good opportunity for bringing this about. Whenever God opens the door for the word in order to declare the mystery of Christ, then the living God, and He whom He has sent for the salvation of all, Jesus Christ, are confidently and perseveringly proclaimed to all people (Vatican II, Ad Gentes,13). We who have received the gift of faith should feel the need to share it with others. With the lives of the first Christians as our model, we can ask ourselves again, whether or not we are proclaiming Jesus Christ in the midst of our world.
Next week our Diocese will launch our hope for an planned environmental and sustainability project; you will find details of this in the Newsletter next week, together with some relevant literature. Also next Sunday there will be the annual Mission Appeal for the Comboni Missions.
