Fifteenth Sunday in ordinary Time

Dear friends in Christ

In the Gospel of the Mass this Sunday, Jesus is asked by a Doctor of the Law: who is my neighbour? He responds by giving us the Parable of the Good Samaritan. We know that in the course of life we come across people who have been wounded or injured and left half-dead in body or in spirit. Concern to help these souls rises-up from our relationship with Jesus Christ. He is the one who opens our hearts and broadens our horizons so that we see beyond our own selfishness and prejudices. We encounter people around us who are often the victims of misunderstanding or loneliness, those deprived of the most basic human needs; those humiliated by their circumstances or robbed of the basic necessities; and in the present climate, many who are not able to provide themselves with what is necessary because of economic factors outside of their control. As members of the Body of Christ, we cannot pass-by on the other side of the road, however repulsed we may feel by the plight of those less fortunate. At the end of the Parable Our Lord exhorts us to be like the Good Samaritan: Go and do the same! Go and be compassionate and understanding; go and bandage the wounds of the ones we see left half-dead; go and bring those souls destitute—in body or spirit—to the source of healing. For as Jesus says in another Parable: As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me!

God bless you!

Flower Festival - 10th September 2022

It is time to be creative again! Thank you to all those who have already said that they want to take part.

The theme of the Flower and Arts & Crafts festival this year is Christian Feasts and Festivals. Like last year we would like people to create a flower arrangement, or tapestries, paintings, photographs (or any type of craft work) on the theme chosen.

The main topics will be: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Holy Family, Lent, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christ the King, Pentecost, Ascension Day, Corpus Christi, All Saints & All Souls Day, St Peter & Paul.

There are of course other special feast days you can choose. In Anglican churches Harvest festivals are prominent whilst there are several special feast days for Our Lady in the Catholic church.

Many people who visit during the festival have no religious background and we want to present a powerful and prayerful message about Christianity.

Please let me know which theme or themes you will be doing and in what medium.  (mcronan@btinternet.com)

Thanks, Jo Ronan

If anyone has a box ready for emptying, please let me have it personally or leave it in the office for me. The Nat. West bank in Leigh is closing at the end of August so I would like to get as many boxes as I can dealt with by then.

Thank you. Joan Caunce, Secretary, 01268 757505.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends in Christ

The liturgy of this Sunday focuses our thoughts and prayers on peace.

Dear friends in Christ

The liturgy of this Sunday focuses our thoughts and prayers on peace. The Prophet Isaiah in the first reading announces that the coming of the Messiah will be signalled by a great peace on the earth. In the Gospel of the Mass Jesus tells those whom He sends out to make their first greeting to the homes they enter, a greeting of peace. However, we might wonder how this has not been achieved as we look across the centuries and see so much conflict, disharmony and lack of peace. In our own times, and especially in the twentieth century, we have witnessed so much inhumanity and wickedness. The war in Europe at the present time fills our hearts with anguish and anxiety. The beginning of peace is the presence of Christ in the hearts of His followers. St Paul affirms that Christ Himself is our peace (Eph.2:14). We know that our evil thoughts and intentions bring us disquiet and this should make us realise where the origins of peace lay. There is no peace without repentance and contrition. There is no peace unless we are deeply sincere with ourselves and acknowledge those things in our lives that separate us from God and our fellow human beings. There is no peace unless we can confront ourselves in a daily act of self-examination and sorrow. We have so many sources of peace available to us such as the Sacrament of Confession and prayer before the Tabernacle. Ask Mary, Regina Pacis...Queen of Peace, to calm our anxieties and bring us to Christ, the Prince of Peace.

With my prayers and blessings

Msgr Kevin Hale
