Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends in Christ

The purpose of the parable we hear in the Gospel of Mass this Sunday, is to show us the difference between true and false piety. The Tax Collector stood far-off because he did not wish to thrust himself before God but wanted to approach Him in humility. The Pharisee, on the other hand, wanted God—and everyone else—to see his virtue. Jesus reminds us here, that humility is the foundation of all our dealings with God. He wants us to pray like innocent and needy children who desire His mercy. God wants us to go to Him with confidence. Bring to Him your works, your projects, your fears and whatever interests you. Act with a trusting and open heart. For God does not speak to those who never speak to Him (St Alphonsus, Sermon 9,21). We may not experience any special feelings in our prayer. This should never worry us. The most important way to pray is in perseverance; never giving-up; never being put-off when we seem to be in the desert and all feels arid. In such moments it is faithfulness to time with God that will bear the most fruit, and bring the most reward. Those in love often will not have heightened feelings of enthusiasm. It is enough to be with the one we love, enjoying their company, and often not saying much. Jesus waits for us each day, so that we can be in conversation with Him and receive the grace and solace we need. As we come to the end of October, we ask Mary to teach us each day how to speak to Jesus, and above all, never to neglect prayer.

God bless you!

Msgr Kevin Hale
