Catholic Guided Pilgrimage of Cambridge
Monday 11th September by coach. Please join us for a guided pilgrimage of Cambridge with Father Graham Smith and Father Paul Keane, Catholic Chaplain to Cambridge University, and a Brentwood diocesan Priest.
The tour begins after a short comfort break upon arrival and will include Holy Mass at 1:10pm, lunch immediately follows Mass (please bring your own packed lunch) the tour will conclude by 4pm when we depart.
The tour includes the place where St Simon Stock had his vision of the Virgin Mary holding a brown Scapular. Cambridge is also a place that has produced 40 martyrs. The pilgrimage includes a tour of John Fisher House. Please be at the coach at 9:20am to depart 9:30am promptly from St John Fisher Church, Prittlewell (layby opposite Fair Havens Hospice). BIN A TIN FOR VIN
The St Vincent Centre is doing wonderful work in Southend helping the poorest amongst us.
You can help the food bank there by bringing a tin of something with you when you come to mass and putting it in VINNIE'S BIN, which will be in the OLD BAPTISTERY.
This will be emptied twice weekly.

Repository Open
After the summer break the Repository is now open. We have a very nice selection of new stock which includes a small selection of Statues. Thinking ahead to “All Souls” in November we have a selection of Graveside lights, Lanterns and some small Remembrance tokens. These will of course be available each week . You are all welcome to come and browse and if you do not see what you are looking for please ask one of the Volunteers.
If you have a short time to spare before and after a weekend Mass, please consider volunteering at the Repository. Please leave your name and contact number at the Parish Office.
Contactless Payments/Offerings
The contactless device is now permanently situated at the back of the church and may be used for Offertory and Second Collection offerings, Repository payments, candles, SVP and other stipends.
Bereavement Support Group

Jesus offers us the challenging invitation to follow Him—by carrying the Cross with Him. These words from the Gospel this Sunday always strike at what is most vital but also most demanding in our following of Jesus. To carry the Cross with our Lord means that we throw-in our lot with Him. God never asks anything of what he Himself has not experienced, nor gives us a Cross that will break us. God does not make demands, but He has expectations. To follow Jesus when everything is going well in life is pleasant. To follow Him when life gets messy—health-wise, in relationships, in the Church and in the world—requires a commitment which is sustained in prayer and the grace of the Sacraments. We cannot function at the level for which we have been created without prayer and the Sacraments. One of the universal experiences of Christian discipleship is the apparent silence of God at these times of trial. Therefore, it is good to recall that whenever a teacher sets a test, it is normally carried out in silence!
On a personal note, some of you will know that my Father has been in bad health for most of this year, following a serious fall in January. He has been cared for in Hospital and at home (but mostly in Hospital) all these months. He is almost ninety-four and very frail. Although it has been a challenge at times, it has been a privilege being able to give back the time and affection we received as children. Our parents, our families and friends, are precious gifts, and the gift and example of fatherhood which I have experienced, has been the inspiration for spiritual fatherhood in my Priesthood. Please keep Dad—William Denis—in your prayers.
Sunday, 1st October, will be the twentieth anniversary of my arrival as Parish Priest here in Leigh. This is the longest period of time I have spent anywhere in my life, and I am grateful to God—and to all of you—for the happiness and blessings that I have experienced in that time. I would dearly love to mark that moment with you and after 11.30am Mass that Sunday I invite you to a Reception with some food and drink in the Parish Centre.
As our Schools and Colleges resume their new Term after the Summer break, we wish our students and all who work in places of education, our prayerful support. May our Catholic Schools, Colleges and Universities be ever places where Jesus is at the centre and the Truth of our Catholic Faith is taught, promoted and lived, at every level.

If your child is going into Year 3 or above and you wish for them to make their First Holy Communion, please submit the application by Friday 8th September 2023.

We are back! And very pleased to welcome you all after the summer break, on Thursday 7th September from 10 am in the Parish Centre. New members are always welcome so do come along and meet friends old and new, enjoy tea/coffee and cake for subs of just £1.00 per Meeting plus a fun Raffle.
At our first Meeting of the Autumn term you are invited to bring along your favourite Book , Poem or anecdote to share so please don’t be shy! There is no pressure for anyone to do anything, just turn up and enjoy yourselves in a convivial atmosphere, and hear about our plans for future Meetings. PS Raffle prizes greatly appreciated!
