Dear friends in Christ
I wish you all the peace and blessings of this Christmas week in abundance!
Dear friends in Christ
I wish you all the peace and blessings of this Christmas week in abundance!
As we gather with family and friends at this time, we celebrate the unique and beautiful family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Whilst we may feel our experience of family life is far from ideal at times, we can be sure of the prayers of the Holy Family to support us, as we live the joys, sufferings and experiences of life together. This weekend, to mark the Feast, our Bishop has written a Pastoral Letter which will be read at the Masses.
Thank you all for the many greetings that you have sent over the Christmas celebration: your greetings cards, gifts and Christmas Offerings which are so much appreciated. The first greeting of the angels at the birth of Jesus was: Glory to God in the highest! This is the primary motive for everything we do as Christians: that God is glorified in all things. We extend our thanks as a Parish Family to all those who have arranged the Christmas liturgies and decorations: the many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that God’s House and the family of the Church are fittingly prepared and arranged to give the fullest glory to God that we can.
I would very much like to place on record my deepest gratitude to the other priests who live in the Parish, especially Fathers Joyce and Selvini. The help they offer is invaluable—particularly by visiting the sick—which allows me to give time to my Diocesan duties. We especially remember the father of Father Selvini—Roland Selvini—who died last month; Christmas without our parents is difficult, so we remember him and all those of you who have had a bereavement during this last year; may they rest in the peace of our Saviour.
We have just begun the Jubilee Year of Hope initiated by Pope Francis, which continues throughout 2025 until Epiphany 2026, as a time of special grace and pilgrimage. It is also the Centenary of our church which was opened and consecrated in September 1925. Part of our celebration of these two events will be the Parish Mission in the second week of Lent. In the meantime, I wish you all every grace, peace and blessing for the New Year ahead!

Dear friends in Christ
Shortly after the Annunciation Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth.
Dear friends in Christ
Shortly after the Annunciation Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. The Gospel tells us that Mary went with haste into the hill country…she went so that she could be with her cousin who was expecting John the Baptist in order to assist her, even if she might have preferred to remain at home and prepare for the birth of her own child. We consider this mystery in the life of Our Blessed Lady each time we pray the second joyful mystery of the Rosary. It is also an image we see when we come into our church, portrayed in the reredos. Very often the best service we can render to others is to simply remain with them, joyfully and unpretentiously. But we can only do this if we are close to Christ through a faithful commitment to prayer throughout the day. In the days of Christmastide ahead, we shall have many opportunities to be of service to others, either by providing friends and family with hospitality, by being with someone who is alone and in need, by attending to the needs of those who need us. Let Mary be our inspiration for the celebrations of this season ahead of us. Throughout all of these mysteries in the life of our Incarnate Lord, Mary has a pivotal place. May she draw us more deeply into the mystery of the Incarnation. I pray that we may all have a joyful celebration of the Christmas feasts. As we begin the Jubilee Year of Hope this Christmas, may the message of hope be a reality for the way we live our lives, and may we be the conduits of supernatural hope for the people around us!
Thanks to all those who prepared and participated in the Carol Service Friday evening. It was lovely to have so many of you present with our distinguished guests. It provided much appreciated support for two worthy local Charities: Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society and YMCA.
Please bring your crib figures of the baby Jesus to Mass this Sunday, which we will bless at the end of Mass ahead of placing them on Christmas Day.

The Jubilee Year of Hope 2025
"Jubilee” is the name given to a particular year; the name comes from the instrument used to mark its launch. In this case, the instrument in question is the yobel, the ram's horn, used to proclaim the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This (Jewish) holiday occurs every year, but it takes on special significance when it marks the beginning of a Jubilee year. We can find an early indication of it in the Bible: a Jubilee year was to be marked every 50 years, since this would be an “extra” year, one which would happen every seven weeks of seven years, i.e., every 49 years (cf. Leviticus 25:8-13). Even though it wasn’t easy to organise, it was intended to be marked as a time to re-establish a proper relationship with God, with one another, and with all of creation, and involved the forgiveness of debts, the return of misappropriated land, and a fallow period for the fields.
Quoting the prophet Isaiah, the Gospel of Luke describes Jesus’ mission in this way: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord,” (Luke 4:18-19; cf. Isaiah 61:1-2). Jesus lives out these words in his daily life, in his encounters with others and in his relationships, all of which bring about liberation and conversion.
In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII called the first Jubilee, also known as a “Holy Year,” since it is a time in which God's holiness transforms us. The frequency of Holy Years has changed over time: at first, they were celebrated every 100 years; later, in 1343 Pope Clement VI reduced the gap between Jubilees to every 50 years, and in 1470 Pope Paul II made it every 25 years. There have also been “extraordinary” Holy Years: for example, in 1933 Pope Pius XI chose to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of the Redemption, and in 2015 Pope Francis proclaimed the Year of Mercy as an extraordinary jubilee. The way in which Jubilee Years are marked has also changed through the centuries: originally the Holy Year consisted of a pilgrimage to the Roman Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul, later other signs were added, such as the Holy Door. By participating in the Holy Year, one is granted a plenary indulgence. The characteristics of the Jubilee Year are: making a Pilgrimage, passing through one of the Holy Doors in the designated Churches, especially the Roman Basilicas; Reconciliation (Sacrament of Confession) and prayer. In the Diocese of Brentwood Holy Doors will be opened in—The Cathedral of St Mary & St Helen, Brentwood, The National Shrine of Our Lady of Light, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Clacton, Saint Antony of Padua, Forest Gate. Within our own Diocese we can fulfil the indulgence by visiting one of these churches.
The particular theme and intention of this Jubilee Year is Hope. Let us then, go forward in Hope in Christ as the sole Redeemer of mankind and live daily the promises He gives us whilst making use of the divine treasury being opened-up for us by our Mother the Church.
