First Sunday of Lent
Dear friends in Christ
We have begun Lent in the traditional manner: with a day of penance on Ash Wednesday and we are now on the annual pilgrimage towards Easter.
Dear friends in Christ
We have begun Lent in the traditional manner: with a day of penance on Ash Wednesday and we are now on the annual pilgrimage towards Easter. This Lent has a special poignancy for all of us, because it is a Jubilee Year, the Year of Hope. It is also the centenary of our church building in Leigh and next week we shall begin the Parish Mission which highlights both of these celebrations within the Church. We have been praying for many months that there will be abundant spiritual fruits as a result of our Mission. Next weekend Fathers Dominic O'Toole and Royston Price of the Redemptorists will arrive and begin to lead us in our spiritual exercises. During each day of the Mission there will be a focus on a particular aspect and mystery of our Faith. My hope, and indeed my expectation is, that each of us will try to attend church twice each day: once for Holy Mass in the morning at either 7 or 9am (which will include a short instruction) and then in the evening at 7pm. We should see the Mission as a mini-retreat within Lent this year. Please make leaflets advertising the Mission (found at the back of church) available to as many of your family, friends and neighbours as possible; by doing this you will be acting like true Apostles bringing souls to Christ.
Please remember to pray for those who will be Received into the Church this Easter. On Sunday afternoon all of those from around the Diocese who are preparing for the Sacraments will go to Brentwood Cathedral to be presented to the Bishop; there are six from our own Parish. Please also pray for those young adults who will begin preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, to be given by the Bishop when he visits us on Sunday, 1st June.
Let us all strive to live this Lent with the spiritual intensity and engagement that manifests our belief that we are pilgrims on this earth, moving towards our homeland of Heaven, confident in the hope of the Resurrection.
May God bless us all!
Msgr Kevin Hale

We pray for the sick of our parish
“Father,
by the power of your Spirit
you have filled the hearts of your faithful people
with gifts of love for one another.
Hear the prayers we offer for our relatives and friends.
Give them health of mind and body
that they may do your will with perfect love.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.”

Fairtrade—Sunday 9th March—8.30am-11.30am
The Fairtrade stall will resume this sunday—9th March. Please come and support this initiative, helping our brothers and sisters around the world who struggle to survive. Fairtrade products are sold to give the farmers, together with other projects a fair price for their work. Products are produced in a sustainable way, helping to look after our common home. The Pope is asking us to be 'Pilgrims of Hope' to others and this is a great way of demonstrating that. Thank you for all the support you have given us to date.

Assisted Suicide Bill update
Last year, MPs narrowly voted to support Kim Leadbeater’s dangerous assisted suicide Bill at Second Reading.
There’s still time to stop it.
The Independent newspaper, shows that at least 36 MPs who supported the Bill made it clear they did so only to allow time for further debate or they have concerns that mean they won’t commit to supporting the Bill at Third Reading.
With the vote passing by a margin of 55, just 28 MPs switching their stance to oppose the Bill would ensure it is defeated at Third Reading.
With more awareness of the serious risks, arising from the committee stage, many MPs could change their position.
If enough do, we can defeat this Bill at Third Reading and stop it from becoming law.
You can make a difference right now, by contacting your MP, to say, vote NO, at Third Reading.
It only takes a couple of minutes of your time, using our easy-to-use tool, which you can access by clicking the button below.
