November—Month of the Holy Souls
How to obtain a Plenary Indulgence for the Souls in Purgatory this November
Every year between 1–8 November the Church grants a plenary indulgence that can be applied only to the souls in purgatory. The faithful can receive this indulgence on each of the eight days to apply to a particular soul — a parent, spouse, relative, friend, or anyone even unknown.
1) Pray At a Cemetery or in our Memorial Garden
The Church asks the faithful to visit a cemetery and pray for the deceased, even if only mentally. Some suggested prayers include the Prayer of St. Gertrude or the Eternal Rest prayer.
2) Go to Confession and receive Holy Communion
In order for one to obtain a plenary indulgence, whether it be for the poor souls or for oneself, the person must detach oneself from all sin. If the soul is not detached, a partial indulgence will be applied.
However, for the sick, elderly, homebound, they can “unite themselves spiritually to other members of the faithful.”
The Church encourages this prayer “before an image of Jesus or the Blessed Virgin Mary, reciting pious prayers for the deceased, for example, Lauds and Vespers of the Office of the Dead, the Marian Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, other prayers for the deceased dearest to the faithful, or occupy themselves in considered reading of one of the Gospel passages proposed by the liturgy of the deceased, or perform a work of mercy by offering to God the sorrows and hardships of their own lives.”
The individual must also have “the intention of complying as soon as possible,” to the three conditions (sacramental Confession, Holy Communion, and praying for the Holy Father).
3) Pray for the Pope
The Church suggests that the faithful pray one ‘Our Father’ and one ‘Hail Mary’ for the Holy Father.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest in peace. Amen.
Holy Souls Box
During November we customarily keep the memories of our Beloved Dead in our prayers. Their names will be placed under the Altar by using one of the envelopes at the back of church (please add your Gift Aid number) and placing it in the box provided, including an offering if you can, for Holy Souls Masses. In this way, we present them to God in the Masses and Offices during the month of the Holy Souls.
SVP Awareness Month
November is the St Vincent De Paul's awareness month. There will be a short address following each Mass. Our local group tries to offer companionship, through befriending, and practical help for individuals and families in the community. If you think you would like to join our Parish group, please contact Sallie Pollock on 07450 277956.
The Young Vincentians of the Parish are very proactive in fundraising activities to support the Parish SVP. Last year we raised almost £1000, which we gave to them to use as they deemed necessary. Journey in Faith—RCIA
This continues on Monday 26th October at 7.30pm and is specifically for those who are not Catholics but who are enquiring with a view to finding out more about the Catholic Faith and Reception into the Church. These evenings are held in the Parish Centre and last for one hour. Names may be given in advance to Father Kevin or to the Parish Office.
Those interested in reading or learning more before the course begins may wish to purchase a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church from the Catholic Truth Society, or listen to The Catechism in a Year podcast with Fr Mike Schmitz.
Parish Christmas Bazaar - Sunday 22nd November, 8.30am - 1.00pm

Dear friends in Christ
Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar—and to God what belongs to God. It is one of those Gospel sayings that we can hear so often that we risk missing how radical it really is. The Pharisees and Herodians come to Jesus with a question designed to trap Him. Is it lawful to pay the tax to Caesar or not? If Jesus says yes, He risks appearing to approve of Roman occupation. If He says no, He can be accused of rebellion. Either answer seems to put Him in difficulty. But Jesus does not allow Himself to be drawn into their trap. He asks them to look at the coin. Whose image is on it? Caesar’s. Then comes His remarkable answer: Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar—and to God what belongs to God.
The coin bears Caesar’s image. But we bear the image of God. That changes everything. We can give Caesar a coin. We can fulfil our civic responsibilities. We can be good citizens, contribute to the common good, and take seriously our responsibilities in the society in which we live. But there is something Caesar can never claim: our worship, our conscience, our ultimate allegiance. Those belong to God.
And perhaps this is the question the Gospel quietly places before each of us this Sunday: What have I given to God? It is perhaps easy to give God an hour on Sunday. It is much harder to give Him our whole heart. It is easy to say that we believe in God. It is more demanding to allow that belief to shape the way we speak, spend, forgive, work, vote, serve, and treat the person standing before us.
Everything we have ultimately comes to us as a gift. Our life, our abilities, our relationships, our time, our possessions—even the opportunities we sometimes take for granted. We are not the absolute owners of these things. We are stewards. And so Jesus' words are not simply about separating religion from politics. They are about putting everything in its proper place.
Perhaps this week we might pause and ask ourselves: Where in my life have I allowed something other than God to become too important? Is it money? Success? Politics? Reputation? Comfort? The opinions of others? Even our worries can sometimes occupy a place in our hearts that belongs to God alone. The good news is that He calls us back to Himself because He knows that we become most fully ourselves when we remember whose image we bear.
Last Saturday Our Holy Father Pope Leo appointed Bishop Timothy Menezes as the eighth Bishop of Brentwood. Bishop Menezes is Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham, and we welcome him as our new Shepherd. Our new Bishop has extensive pastoral experience, having been a Parish Priest, Bishop’s Secretary, Dean of the Cathedral, Vicar General and a Bishop for the last two years. We assure him of our prayers and best wishes as he comes to us and formally takes up his post on 3rd December. At the same time we pray with thanksgiving to God for the twelve years that Bishop Alan Williams has given in service to our Diocese, and that he will have a long and happy retirement. God bless all of us in this Diocese together our new Bishop. May God and His Blessed Mother watch over and protect Pope Leo as he recovers from his recent surgery.
