Women’s World Day of Prayer

Women’s World day of prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the voices of women from all parts of the world:  their hopes, concerns and prayers.

The theme of our service is ‘Streams in the Desert’ and we are asked to reflect on our Christian role of being a ‘stream in the desert’ for those who experience      spiritual drought.  We believe that the service from Egypt has universal appeal.

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, Egypt has long been home to Coptic Christians.  Since the uprising in 2011 there has been conflict between religious groupings.  Political change affects individual lives and we pray with the women of Egypt for peace.

We envisage a great wave of prayer, rising with the sun over the island of Samoa, and sweeping across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas,    coming to rest in American Samoa some 36 hours later.  By then WWDP services will have been celebrated in over 170 countries.

All are welcome to attend, men and women and people of all ages.  The service for the western area of Southend-on-Sea will be held on Friday, 7th March at 10.30 am at Crowstone St. Georges United Reformed Church, Corner of Crowstone Road and Kings Road, Westcliff-on-Sea.  The Speaker is Rev. Melanie Smith, Minister of  Crowstone St. Georges.

Brentwood Cathedral

There will be a special choral vespers in the Cathedral on Sunday, 16th March, at 4.15 pm with the Cathedral Choir.  The music will include hymns, psalms and polyphony by the composers Victoria and Morten Lauridsen.  This vespers will be attended by members of The Friends of Cathedral Music.  This organisation promotes the wonderful tradition of choral music in our cathedrals and also further supports this by offering occasional grants. We would welcome as much support as possible.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends in Christ

This Sunday is the Opening day for our new Parish Centre.  It will begin at one o’clock in the church with a short liturgy presided over by the Bishop in the presence of local dignitaries and Parishioners.  We shall then process to the new building where the Bishop will bless the Centre and then there will be an afternoon of celebration concluding with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at four o’clock.  A setting of the “Te Deum” has been commissioned by our resident Musician, James Devor.  Also a mosaic of Our Lady of Lourdes adorns the entrance lobby of the new building (which is the image on the Newsletter this week) the work of local Artist, Paul Siggins, with help from children in our Primary School and their gift to the Parish Centre.

It hardly needs saying after all these years of preparation, fundraising and effort, that this is a most marvellous milestone in the life of our Parish.  We have recently celebrated our Centenary Year, and this moment begins a new era in our Parish with a building which future generations can be rightly proud of.  There are numerous people who should be thanked for this work, too many to mention here!  Above all, it has been the tireless efforts of all of you, through your prayer, encouragement and practical contributions that have made this all possible.

It is our Patronal Feastday this Tuesday (11th) and in the morning I shall celebrate Mass with the children and staff of our Primary School in the church.  In the evening there will be a Sung Mass followed by drinks in the Parish Centre.  I have invited Fr Lee Bennett of Benfleet Parish to preach at the Mass.

We give thanks to The Most Blessed Trinity and invoke the continued protection of Our Blessed Lady!

Fr Kevin Hale
