Twenty-second Sunday of the Year
Dear friends in Christ
Following the Gospel of last weekend in which St Peter makes his profession of faith in Christ, there follows this week the revelation of the Passion. This shocks the disciples, since it had not entered into their heads that our Lord would have to suffer and be rejected in this manner; they still thought of His kingdom in political and earthly terms. Hence the rebuke that Jesus gives them and the admonition that the Cross is an essential part of discipleship. Christian spirituality is based on the desire to follow Christ and is found in the daily loving acceptance of pain and sacrifice. There is really no such thing as a fruitful life that is without sacrifice. We all want to be free of suffering, of difficulties and hardship; this is a natural human inclination. But the Christian way of living teaches us that happiness is only possible by embracing whatever comes across our path. We live in a pleasure-seeking world and therefore anything which speaks of the Cross sounds strangely dissonant. Jesus teaches us by contrast that radical renunciation of self is the best way to find fulfilment, since it identifies us with him, the Son of God, who alone shows us the way to perfect happiness.
This week our Schools and Colleges begin a new academic year; many of our young people will also soon be leaving home for tertiary education. Let us go to God the Holy Spirit to ask the help and inspiration necessary to work well in this new year; to be fruitful in what we do, and thereby make a concrete contribution to the building-up of our world with Christ at it’s centre. 200 Club
Since the 200 Club was formed in July 2006, £50,700 has been raised towards the Parish Centre Fund. We sincerely thank all the parishioners who have, and continue, to support it.
However, since the Parish Centre was opened, member numbers have fallen from 223 to 184. As the 200 Club continues to provide a regular source of income towards the running expenses of the Parish Centre, it is necessary to address this issue.
We would therefore invite you to consider joining the 200 Club. Membership is £5 per month, payable by cash, cheque or direct debit. There are five prizes each month and the draw takes place after 9.30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month. Forms are available at the back of the church or, alternatively, please telephone Linda Wall on 558217.

Mothers’ Prayers
The Mothers’ Prayers meeting will resume on Wednesday, 10th September in the Newman Room at 10.30 am. Everyone is welcome to join us for this special time of intercession for our children and grandchildren, the unborn and children of the world.
Mothers Prayers was started in England in November 1995 and has spread rapidly throughout the world with contacts in over 100 Countries and has the approval, support and blessing of Christian leaders of all denominations. There are now thousands of groups around the world. Two grandmothers, Veronica and her sister-in-law Sandra, felt led by the Lord to start Mothers Prayers and to pray in a special way for their children.
They felt that they should bring all the pain and the worries they had for their children to Him and to trust in His words ‘Ask and you will receive’. Through this promise, they understood that the Lord is just waiting to take away pain and to bless and heal them and their children when they come to Him in Faith.
During these years there have been many, many wonderful answers to prayers including children coming off drugs, children returning home after being absent for many years, improvements in children’s health and relationships (in the family and at school). The mothers also have been blessed and have experienced a great peace.

St Vincent de Paul Society Awareness Month
September is Awareness Month for the SVP: this year’s theme is Concern is not Enough. During the month there will be weekly notices in the Parish Newsletter illustrating aspects of our work and the theme. The annual appeal will be held during the weekend of 13th/14th September. Your past response is much appreciated and we thank you in anticipation of your continued support.
