The liturgy of this weekend reminds us that one who is an Apostle is someone who is sent. As Amos the prophet is sent, so also Jesus sends out his Apostles in pairs to proclaim the good news about God and His kingdom. Pope Francis has recently reminded us that as Catholics we are to be missionary disciples of Jesus Christ and as such all our work and effort must be channelled into this. Our Parishes too, must bear the distinguishing mark of this sense of being sent. We have received something great and so we are compelled to tell others about what we have experienced. Many Catholics however, have not experienced this personal encounter with Christ, either because we have not prayed as we should, or been formed properly in our Faith or in a sense of what it means to belong to the Body of Christ. Many of us have been catechised and taught the doctrines of the Faith, but this does not always mean we have engaged with the person of Christ on a profound level. In order for us to be convincing missionary disciples of Jesus Christ we need to constantly nurture and develop our friendship with Jesus through knowledge of Him which comes, above all, with reflection on His Word and engagement in prayer, personal dialogue. Let each of us resolve, as we listen to these passages of the Scriptures at Mass again this weekend, to be in the same mould as those whom Our Lord first sent into the world.

I am grateful, as I said on that occasion, for all the help and collaboration that has been given to me over this last year - and especially the additional help I have received in the last six months since becoming Vicar General - and we thank those who helped make the Garden Party an enjoyable social moment of the year. Carmelite Meeting
The next Carmelite Meeting is on Saturday 25th July. The Carmelites say the Rosary in the church at 2.15pm, then the meeting commences at 2.30pm in the Newman Centre, tea/coffee is provided. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in deepening their faith, we normally finish by 5pm. Why not come and see what we are all about, you are welcome to come for part or all of the meeting. You will be most welcome.

SERVING THE HOMELESS
Serving the Homeless are selling raffle tickets for their grand summer draw. There are many prizes including £150 worth of meat from a butcher. Tickets cost £1 each or a book of 5 for £5. If you would like to buy some please see a member of the Committee: Nina Bridgeman, Shirley Murphy, Jane Price, Jo Ronan, Linda Wall or Theresa.
HARP
There is an urgent need for men’s clothing, especially t-shirts (small and medium), small and medium jeans, shoes, new boxer shorts, new socks, as demand is far outweighing supply. We would be very grateful to receive any items of clothing you may have. Please leave them in the box in the sacristy or contact Linda Wall, 558217, for collection.
Additionally, supplies of food donated at harvest last year have now dwindled and supplies are running very short. Tinned and dried foods are urgently required as well as the usual night-pack items.

Dear friends in Christ
During the coming weeks the pace of life for many families and individuals slows down; our Schools have completed their examinations, families prepare to take holidays and many of us look forward to a relaxed Summer season. All this is good and part of God’s plan: we need to take rest and recover our energies so that we can return to undertake our normal work in the family or in our professions, with greater enthusiasm. This time apart from the normal activities of the year, should make us more aware of our need for God and the Church. It could be a time for us to undertake some serious reading and reflection on our Faith; a time for prayer, and above all never forgetting the duty we have to God, and each other, by participation in the weekly Mass. Last Sunday, for example, I spoke about the recent Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis on the good use of the created world. I hope that many of us will find some time to read what he is writing to us on the importance of our stewardship of nature. Leaving aside any polemics associated with the future of our planet, Pope Francis is asking us to recover a sense of how the world and everything in it, cannot be possessed by us as though we are the sole masters. Everything in nature is given to us for a purpose and must not be manipulated in any selfish manner. His inspiration is clearly from the Bible, the Church Fathers and Medieval Saints and of course, St Francis of Assisi, who by his profound immersion in the created world shows us how to praise God in everything that surrounds us.
I hope many of you will be able to attend the Annual Parish Meeting this Sunday evening and Garden Party. God bless you all during this week.
