News of the Diocese
This week I would like to share with you some important news of our Diocese. Over the last year our Bishop, Alan Williams, has been slowly discerning the best way to re-organise and govern certain areas of Diocesan life and administration. So, this year there have been some changes at the Diocesan Offices in Brentwood with a rationalisation of staffing. The Bishop has appointed four Episcopal Vicars to oversee areas of Administration, Pastoral Formation, Education and Evangelisation and, as you know, I was appointed Vicar General. To assist the Bishop in his role as Shepherd in the Diocese, there exists the Council of Priests and a College of Consultors; this body can be the Chapter of Canons. Traditionally it was the function of the Canons of a Diocese to pray the liturgy in the Cathedral and act as the close advisers and collaborators of the Bishop. For over three decades there have not been any new Canons appointed in Brentwood but this week our Bishop has decided to revive the Chapter of Canons so that their important work can function again. There are nine new Chapter Canons: Canons Patrick Sammon, Paul Bruxby, Peter Connor, John McGrath, Anthony McKentey, Martin O’Connor, Brian O’Shea, William Young & myself. The first meeting of the Chapter will be in the New Year with the ceremony of Installation in the Cathedral at Brentwood. Please pray for us in these new responsibilities that, we may assist the Bishop with our prayer and loyalty, in his grave task of leading and guiding the People of God. Also I am pleased to tell you that a new Vocations Director has been appointed: Fr Graham Smith.
I wrote last week about the forthcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy which begins in Advent. Our Bishop will celebrate a Mass signalling the start of the Jubilee Year in the Cathedral on Tuesday, 8th December at 7.30pm. I hope that many of us will be able to attend this and, united as a Diocesan Family, begin this time of grace together. May God bless you and please, continue to pray for me!

Scripture Group
Fr Con Joyce’s Scripture Group will meet in the Parish Centre 8pm-9pm on Thursday, 5th November. These meetings are held to give us a better understanding of the Bible, to encourage us to read it and so help us to come closer to Jesus in our daily lives as Christians. All welcome.

Their names will be placed under the Altar during November, together with the Register of the Dead. Envelopes should be placed in the box provided in the West Porch or handed in to the Parish Office.

Parish/Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes 14th-20th August 2016
Next year the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place around the Solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption. A Parish group is being planned to coincide with the Diocese being there with our Bishop (and Vicar General!). Six nights (full board) travelling with British Airways via Toulouse and staying at the Grand Hotel Moderne will cost £635. Please indicate your interest by putting your name on the list in the Parish Office as soon as possible.

Dear friends in Christ
As the second week of the Synod of Bishops in Rome comes to completion (there is one more to go) we can reflect on the words of Jesus in this Sunday’s Gospel: the work of the Apostles (the Bishops of the Church today) is to be at the service of the Truth. This service inevitably brings with it suffering and martyrdom – the chalice Jesus drank – since this has been the fate of the followers of our Saviour since the beginning. The task of the Synod of Bishops – with and under the Pope – is to proclaim the beauty and dignity of marriage and family life in a world that often views these realities with cynicism. We all know people who experience particular difficulties in relationships and family life; the Church exists in an inclusive way to bring all those who bear these wounds to the One who alone can give us hope and fulfilment in life. Pray for the Bishops of the Synod gathered around the Holy Father that, they may be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and continue to lead us in the paths of Truth and Holiness.
Pope Francis has declared next year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy. This will begin on 8th December and extend until the feast of Christ the King at the end of 2016. We have been asked to promote ways of proclaiming the mercy of God during this Holy Year and of ensuring that the doors of the Church are thrown wide-open to those who stand in need of God’s mercy or who have been alienated in any way from Christ and his Church. I would like to propose for our Parish Family two areas in which we might endeavour to fulfil this responsibility. The first would be my desire to have the Chaplet of Divine Mercy prayed daily in the church at three o’clock in the afternoon: the Hour of Mercy, the hour on which Jesus died on the Cross for our salvation. I will be asking for volunteers to lead this each day throughout the Jubilee Year! Secondly, a renewed teaching and call to the Sacrament of Confession and its importance in the spiritual life, especially to those who have grown lukewarm in this practice. Joined with those simple but effective channels of grace, we all need to reach out to the lapsed, the lost and the confused so that they too may experience what is vital in the living of the life of Faith.
