Tenth Sunday of the Year
Dear Friends in Christ
With this weekend we resume the period known as Ordinary Time, although in the coming month there are still some lovely celebrations of the liturgical year. The Gospel at Mass this Sunday - the raising of the son of the widow of Nain - enables us to see the compassion of Jesus. St Luke explains that Jesus was moved. Perhaps He even showed visible signs of His sorrow. Jesus was never and is not now, insensitive to suffering. He knows He is surrounded by a crowd that would be in awe of a miracle but He does does act artificially or for effect. He quite simply is touched by the suffering of the poor woman who had lost her only son. So He goes up to her and comforts and reassures her. In this we can see a model for the way we should feel for others in their misfortunes. We learn from Our Lord to live with a heart like His Heart. The month of June is precisely the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (we celebrated the feast last Friday). By going in and through the Heart of our Saviour we find all of the comfort and consolation we need for this life. Jesus has shown us by His Heart the grandeur of human love that we are called to live.
Last Sunday we honoured Jesus in His real sacramental presence in the celebration of Corpus Christi. Our Procession is an expression of our desire to make Jesus better known and loved in the Eucharist. It was an occasion of joy as a large number of us took Jesus out of the church so that he could be seen by the world. We are all grateful to those who helped dignify the occasion, especially the Tilbury Brass Band who accompanied us and the women of the CWL who provided a wonderful Tea afterwards.
One of the facets of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the reparation, or atoning love, that we can offer to Him for those who do not love Him as much as they could. We have so many opportunities to show our love for God and we can often miss them. We often disappoint Our Lord when we could make the effort to be with Him and choose not to. One of the great disappointments of Priests is seeing little human response for such great love on God’s part. May this month of the Sacred Heart help us respond more generously, even in public ways, to the love Jesus extends to us in His Heart. God bless you all!

Summary of Amoris Laetitia - The Joy of Love:
Chapter five: “Love made fruitful” (165-198)
The fifth chapter is entirely focused on love’s fruitfulness and procreation. It speaks in a profoundly spiritual and psychological manner about welcoming new life, about the waiting period of pregnancy, about the love of a mother and a father. It also speaks of the expanded fruitfulness of adoption, of welcoming the contribution of families to promote a “culture of encounter”, and of family life in a broad sense which includes aunts and uncles, cousins, relatives of relatives, friends. Amoris laetitia does not focus on the so-called “nuclear” family” because it is very aware of the family as a wider network of many relationships. The spirituality of the sacrament of marriage has a deeply social character (cf. AL 187). And within this social dimension the Pope particularly emphasises the specific role of the relationship between youth and the elderly, as well as the relationship between brothers and sisters as a training ground for relating with others.

SVP News - Dementia Awareness
A speaker from The Alzheimers Society will be coming to the parish to give a talk and explain about dementia in order to raise awareness. All are welcome to attend on the evening of 15th June at 8pm. The session will last about one hour and tea/coffee will be served.
Serving the Homeless
A big ‘thank-you’ to all who supported the meal at East. We raised over £600.
In the last few months 'Serving the Homeless’ have supplied 5 new vacuum cleaners to properties run by HARP and another industrial sized washing machine and drier for the Homeless Centre. This is in addition to the £200 per month that we spend on fresh meat, cheese and milk that is used in the projects. Southend YMCA have also opened a new suite of rooms, which we were able to help finance and they have asked us to help them with another conversion project in Westcliff.
Unfortunately the need is still growing, and HARP have just begun a new build that will eventually house 18 female clients. We are already committed to helping them raise the funds to complete this project. Over the last couple of years the number of women and girls needing help has increased significantly. Our next fundraiser is an Afternoon Tea at Park View Suite, Chalkwell Park, on Thursday 23rd June.(Referendum Day!) 2-4pm. Tickets are £10. St Anthony relics will be visiting Ireland and the UK in the form of two relics, one of which is the one Pope Francis venerated sixteen years ago in Argentina. Earlier, in 1995, during the 800th anniversary of St Anthony’s birth, the relic travelled also to Portugal and was received by Sister Lucia, one of the three seers of Fatima, in the Carmelite Convent in Coimbra. The relics will be accompanied by Fr Mario Conte, editor of the Messenger of St Anthony, the magazine published by the Conventual Franciscan Friars of Saint Anthony’s Basilica in Padua, Italy, where the Saint lies in his Tomb.
