St Vincent de Paul Society in our Parish
September is Awareness Month for the SVP. This year our theme is ‘Who Cares?’; the answer, of course, is that the SVP cares. During the last year we have welcomed four new members bringing our total to eleven active members; however, we hope to increase our membership even further. We have made 432 visits and given practical assistance in 169 cases, in total, members spent 1,189 hours on SVP activities and business. Our Annual appeal will be held next weekend as your financial support enables us to fulfil our commitments.
School Admission Forms
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Schools - primary or secondary - for next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. Please come to the Parish Centre for these during the following times:
Saturday, 24th September between 2pm and 4pm
Sunday 25th September, between 2pm and 3pm
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism in the case of Primary School applications, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.

It is so basic and necessary that Jesus takes every opportunity to tell His followers about the need for it. On this particular occasion in the Gospel He uses the example of a banquet. He compares the Christian life to a great feast to which we have been invited. If we know how to assume the lowliest place, then we will always be raised higher and thus noticed, rather than doing things the other way around. Humility properly lived will give us consistency in all of the virtues. In a particular way, the humble person respects others, their opinions and their things, and possesses a special strength, because he or she relies constantly on the goodness and greatness of God, and not on their own power.
Starting this Monday week (5th) I will begin my Three Talks on the Catholic Faith which I deliver around this time each year. The intention is that anyone who is not a Catholic, and would like to discover more about the basics of the Catholic Faith, could come along to these Talks, accompanied by a family member or friend if they prefer. As we approach the Centenary Year of our Diocese (2017) there should be an added impetus for us to wish to communicate our beautiful Catholic Faith to others. God has established the Catholic Church as a beacon of light and truth for the world and, in these times especially, to be working and living our lives so as to attract others to living life in Christ. Baptism Preparation Evenings
The next Baptism Preparation Evenings will take place on Tuesday 6th September and Tuesday 13th September, 2016. Both sessions will begin at 8pm in the Parish Centre. If you wish to attend would you please give your name and telephone number to the Parish secretary.
First Holy Communion 2016/2017
If you have a child going into Year 3 in September and you would like them to make their First Holy Communion in 2017, please complete the on-line Registration Form available from the Parish Website under Sacraments and return this to the Parish Office no later than Wednesday 31st August 2016.
There will be a parent’s meeting on Wednesday 7th September at 8pm in the Parish Centre for those parents who have registered their child to make their First Holy Communion next year.

Twenty-first Sunday of the Year
Dear friends in Christ
We have just returned from our Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, giving thanks for the graces and blessings of the last days. In shrines like Lourdes we see great gatherings of the children of the Church, gathered by Mary, to be close to Jesus in the Mass and in the Blessed Sacrament. Our Lord, through His redemptive love, is the focal point of all mankind. This is what the Prophet Isaiah foretells in the First Reading of the Mass this Sunday: a great calling of all people to faith and salvation, without distinction of language, race or social status. Likewise in the Gospel, when asked who will be saved, Jesus responds by telling us to enter by the narrow door. He goes on to teach His disciples that in order to enter His kingdom - which is the only thing that counts - it is not enough to belong to the Chosen People, or to have a false confidence in Him. All the divine privileges which we have been given are not enough either. What is needed is a faith with works, the kind of faith to which we have all been called. The image of the ancient Patriarchs - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, represented in the artwork this week - remind us further that we are called to inherit the same life which they have with God, because of their faithfulness. All of mankind has a vocation to go to Heaven, Christ’s definitive kingdom. This is what we have been born for, because God desires all men to be saved. As we live and work and have our existence on earth, may we never lose sight of this great goal, the high dignity to which we are called, now and in eternity. God bless you!
