CAFOD Harvest Fast Day – Friday 7 October
As we approach harvest time and rejoice in the abundance that God provides us, Cafod is starting to work with partner organisations in Bolivia to teach new skills to the people of the vast and inhospitable Altiplano plain to help them achieve self-sufficiency in growing enough food to feed their families now and in the future. This includes skills to create vegetable gardens, greenhouses, wormeries and to install irrigation systems. Money raised from Harvest Fast Day this Friday will help support this work. Cafod donation envelopes are available at the back of the Church. Thank you.

Brentwood Catholic Children's Society Annual Draw Tickets
The BCCS works throughout the diocese with schools helping children and their families. Their Counsellors deal with many issues from bereavement to depression and abuse. The annual draw is an enormous part of the Societies’ income and invaluable in the work they carry out. There are draw tickets, costing £1 per ticket, at the back of the church complete with envelopes so you can forward them directly to the BCCS. The tickets are distributed by Knights of Saint Columba – Liam Rand 07952 954833.
Tea Dance at St. Peter's Mazenod Hall
Bruno is organising a Tea Dance to be held at Saint Peter’s Mazenod Hall, Eastwood, on Saturday 15th October starting at 3pm. A classic tea to include sandwiches and cake and the opportunity to strut your stuff on the dance floor to wonderful big band music all for the amazing price £7. Scripture Group
Fr Con Joyce’s Scripture Group will next meet in the Parish Centre 8pm-9pm on Thursday, 6th October. Fr. Con will be talking about the prophets. All welcome.
Knights Organised Community Fayre 22nd October
The Knights of St Columba (KSC) have organised a Community Fayre at Nazareth House, 111 London Road, Westcliff, SS1 1PP on Saturday 22nd October and present will be many local charities, help groups, and local businesses that have something to offer us locally. Open from 10am to 1pm with a fantastic Fair Trade raffle and Fair Trade light refreshments, the exhibitors to date are Sainsburys (Fair Trade range), CAFOD, Essex Savers Credit Union, NF Collins and Son Dairy, SVP, BCCS, Alzheimer’s Society, Southend Association of Voluntary Service (SAVS), Southend Soup, KSC and Hopeworx with more groups to be confirmed. The KSC will be recycling any unwanted spectacles for VisionAid Overseas, unwanted currency, used stamps, and old mobile phones for charity if you want to bring them along and there will be a second hand book stall too. Come and meet some great local people and get some help and ideas whilst having a decent cuppa. Entrance is free.
Charity Film Night

Fr Dominic’s Calais refugee fund. All are welcome.
Christmas Shoebox appeal
Leaflets are available at the back of Church giving instructions on how to fill a shoebox with gifts for a child this Christmas, who otherwise would receive nothing. Filled and ready to collect shoeboxes should be taken to the nearest drop-off point, Leigh Road Baptist Church (opposite the Church in Marguerite Drive) Tel no 01702 478698, by the closing date Friday 18th November 2016. Please do not leave filled shoeboxes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Twenty-sixth Sunday of the Year
Dear friends in Christ
Today’s liturgy and readings remind us that an excessive concern for comfort and the things of this world will inevitably lead us to a neglect of God and neighbour. The Gospel records the parable about a man who fell into this very trap. Instead of winning Heaven through the use of his wealth, he lost it forever. At his door there was a poor man, Lazarus, who begged. The Lord contrasts two extreme conditions in this parable: vast wealth and tremendous need. Jesus says nothing about the possessions of the rich man but puts the entire emphasis on how they have been inappropriately used, mentioning only his opulent lifestyle. Lazarus was not even given his leftovers. This is the essence for the vice which is selfishness; forgetful of others, we seek only our own comfort and consolation. Our life on earth is a testing ground for our generosity. It may be our time, possessions or our talents that we can use for the good of the Church and society. We are asked thus to examine ourselves on our level of detachment and self-giving. Faithfulness to Jesus Christ means we will have Him for all eternity. Our aim is to live so as to possess the only treasure, which is the Divine Love of God.
Following my three introductory Talks on the Faith, each Monday from now until Easter we shall continue as usual with our ABC Course: About Being Catholic. This is primarily intended for all those seeking to discover more about our holy Faith with the hopeful view of entering the life of the Church through the Sacraments at Easter. Do come along if you just want to deepen your knowledge of the Catholic Faith or bring along someone who may be interested. Each Monday evening there is a presentation of a particular element of the Faith from the Creed, to the Sacraments, to Christian living; there is some media input and ends with introducing a way of praying. This Monday there will be a tour of the church. God bless you!
