I returned on Friday from our Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes along with a number of others from the Parish Family. It was, as ever, a time of grace and spiritual renewal when we most assuredly prayed for the Church at this time, and for the needs of our Parish here.

I returned on Friday from our Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes along with a number of others from the Parish Family. It was, as ever, a time of grace and spiritual renewal when we most assuredly prayed for the Church at this time, and for the needs of our Parish here.
The Gospel this Sunday is a number of short parables or similes of what the kingdom of God is like. They describe the nature of the Church in its make-up which reminds us that the Church exists for the salvation of souls. The Lord teaches this same truth on many other occasions. His Church contains saints as well as sinners, His friends and also those who have abandoned Him. We all belong to Him in different ways. Sinners belong to the Church despite their sins. They still can return to the house of their Father, even if it be at the last moment of life. Having received Baptism, they carry within themselves the hope of reconciliation which not even the most grievous sins can erase. The sins which the Church finds in her children do not belong to her. They belong to her enemy. It is always a great sadness when people judge the Church on what she is not. St Pope John Paul II said: The Church is a Mother, through whom we are born to new life in God. A mother should be loved. She is holy with regard to her Founder, her works and her doctrines, but she is, nevertheless, composed of sinful men. It is our duty to make a positive contribution to the life of the Church to help her progress along the way of faithful renewal. This is not accomplished by negative criticisms.(7.xi.82). Therefore, as devout members of God’s Faithful People, we ask the Lord to increase our desire for personal holiness so that we might be more worthy sons and daughters of the Church and so let the authentic face of Christ be seen in our world.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Friends in Christ
This weekend our schools closed for the Summer vacation. In both primary and secondary schools there are students who have left in order to move-on to the next phase of their education, and we wish them all well in their new institutions; as we wish good exam results for those awaiting them next month! However, and in particular, I would like to highlight the retirement of the Headteacher of our Primary School - Mrs Margaret Sullivan - who departs this month. Mrs Sullivan has been the Head of Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School for the last twelve years and as Deputy for four years prior to that. She has been a teacher in Catholic education for the 39 years of her teaching career. So, we owe her a huge debt of gratitude for all that she has done wherever she has taught, but in particular, here in our own Parish School. Many of our young people who have passed-through Our Lady of Lourdes School will have fond memories of times there and the pivotal role Mrs Sullivan played. As a Leader, she has always been at the centre of the School and, with a very maternal approach, formed and guided all for whom she has had responsibility. Her unique and unequivocal Catholic Faith has been the inspiration that has made our own school the beacon of learning and excellence that it is. I know I speak for the whole Parish Family when I say a heartfelt Thank you! Last Monday, during a school assembly, I was able to present Mrs Sullivan with the Papal Blessing which Pope Francis conferred as a token of divine grace and heavenly blessings, for all that she has done for Catholic Education. We will continue to keep her at the heart of the local Parish here and I know she will continue to follow the progress and success of the School as it enters a new chapter.

I was very happy to see a lovely article appear in the current issue ofThe Leigh Times Summer supplement about our Parish. The Reporter is a Parishioner and she has given a very informative upbeat account of Parish life and how the Catholic Church is so clearly at the heart of our Town; thank you Sophie Sleigh-Johnson!
This week I shall be in Lourdes with a group from the Parish on our Diocesan Pilgrimage. I will pray for all your intentions and offer Holy Mass there for the Parish Family.

Lourdes Fund
There has been a small Fund in the Parish to assist young people going on pilgrimage to Lourdes for some years now. It was first endowed by the late Bishop Patrick Casey and has practically dried-up. If there are any groups or individuals who through fundraising or donations would like to continue to endow this Fund then please make any donations payable to the Parish of Leigh-on-Sea and designated it for the Lourdes Fund. Many thanks.
Refreshments in the Parish Centre
From Sunday 24th July refreshments will only be served after the 11.30am Mass. The normal tea/coffee rota will resume in September.
