Homelessness Sunday — January 28th
There will be a second collection next week, following all the masses, for ‘Serving the Homeless.’ This is our local ecumenical Charity which supports Homelessness projects in Southend. Please be as generous as you can.
Facts on homelessness in England in 2017, from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation
- There has been a rise of 32% in local authority ‘actions’ on homelessness since 2009/10
- 60% of local authorities are struggling to find social tenancies for their homeless clients.
- 50% find it difficult to help people into privately rented accommodation
- 85% of local authorities are finding it difficult to help single people aged 25-34 into accommodation
- 94% said that they expect the situation to get worse this year.
- The loss of a private tenancy accounted for 31% of those accepted as homeless in 2017.
- 40,000 people were evicted by private landlords in 2017; 4 out of 5 were ‘no-fault’ evictions — there was no complaint against the tenant. They were evicted because they were low income tenants and the landlords could charge more rent if they evicted them.

The Renewal and Restructuring of our Diocese
For a few weeks now we have been in receipt of the ‘First Formal Proposal’ document and DVD/video message from Bishop Alan. The Proposal and video message are available on the Diocesan website: dioceseofbrentwood.net/bishop. We would ask everyone who has internet access to view the documents and message by this means. Additional ‘hard copies’ for those unable to read/view it online are being requested from the Diocese. If you require a hard copy please let me know by phoning 01702 552373, giving your address and postcode, or leave a request at the parish office. The Proposal shares with us some of the thoughts Bishop Alan and his team have as to how the Diocese might restructure itself in the future to ensure that we can more effectively evangelise, sharing with faith and confidence the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ within our parishes as well as surrounding communities. The Proposal specifically refers to the place of our own parish in any forthcoming restructuring. We are being asked by the Bishop to take time to carefully and prayerfully study the document and discuss it with family, friends and fellow parishioners. An opportunity is being arranged for us to come together as a parish family to share views, hopes and any concerns in relation to the Proposal, with our response in due course being conveyed to the Diocese. Bishop Alan stresses that this is a ‘first’ Formal Proposal; a lot more discussion and consultation will yet be required! A Parish Meeting is being arranged for 10.30am on Saturday, 17th February, 2018 (commencing after the 10am Mass) in the Parish Centre. The Bishop’s video message will be shown on that occasion. For any unable to attend on 17th February, I would be grateful to receive your thoughts in writing via the parish office or by email to obrjam@btinternet.com.

Knights of Saint Columba
The KSC have organised a Race Night and Social with all profits being donated to the Brentwood Ecclesiastical Education Fund for the training of new priests in our diocese.
This takes place on Saturday 27th January at the Mazenod Hall at the parish of
St Peter Eastwood. 6.30pm for 7pm start with a professional race night promoter.
Entry is £1 and places can be booked through Damian Dillon on 07887 678741 or damian.dillon@btinternet.com. Light refreshments will be available.
Journey of Faith (RCIA)
A series of informal talks, designed to give an insight into the teachings and traditions of the Catholic church, continues on Monday 22nd January at 8pm in the Parish Centre with The Sacraments, Baptism and Confirmation.

John’s testimony is an example of the special graces God distributes to attract people to himself. Sometimes he addresses a person directly by stirring his soul and inviting him to follow him; at other times, as in the present case, he chooses to use someone close to us who knows us, to bring us to meet Christ.

John’s testimony is an example of the special graces God distributes to attract people to himself. Sometimes he addresses a person directly by stirring his soul and inviting him to follow him; at other times, as in the present case, he chooses to use someone close to us who knows us, to bring us to meet Christ.
The two disciples already had a keen desire to see the Messiah; John’s words move them to try to become friends of our Lord: it is not merely natural curiosity but Christ’s personality which attracts them. They want to get to know him, to be taught by him and to enjoy his company. “Come and see” a tender invitation to begin that intimate friendship they were seeking. Time and personal contact with Christ will be needed to make them more secure in their vocation. The apostle St John, one of the protagonists in this scene, notes the exact time it took place: “it was about the tenth hour”, roughly four in the afternoon. Christian faith can never be just a matter of intellectual curiosity; it affects one’s whole life: a person cannot understand it unless he really lives it; therefore, our Lord does not at this point tell them in detail about his way of life; he invites them to spend the day with him. St Thomas Aquinas comments on this passage saying that our Lord speaks in a lofty, mystical way because what God is (in himself or in grace) can only be understood through experience: words cannot describe it. We grow in this understanding by doing good works (they immediately accepted Christ’s invitation and as a reward “they saw”), by recollection and by applying our mind to the contemplation of divine things, by desiring to taste the sweetness of God, by assiduous prayer. Our Lord invited everyone to do all this when he said, “Come and see”, and the disciples discovered it all when, in obedience to our Lord, “they went” and were able to learn by personal experience, whereas they could not understand the words alone. Jesus has called each of us in the same way. St Peter reminds us that we should ‘make this call and choice of ours, a daily reality.” God bless us as we move to live the vocation God has given each of us more faithfully.
