School Admission Forms for Primary & Secondary Schools
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Schools for the next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. Please come to the Parish Centre for these on Wednesday, 17th October between 6pm and 7pm.
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.
Sea of Voices Concert - Friday, 23rd November
The Parish’s Community choir is planning on holding a charity concert at the Parish Centre on Friday 23rd November 2018 from 7.30pm. The charity is yet to be chosen so any proposals for something local would be welcomed.
We would also welcome anyone in the Parish who would like to join in with our concert, either singing a solo or playing an instrument, etc along with any donations for a raffle or help serving teas and coffees on the night. Serving the Homeless
Our next fundraising event is "My Kind of Music", popular songs across the years, featuring Elizabeth Upsher. This will be held in our parish centre on Saturday 27th October at 7.30 pm. There will be cheese platters, biscuits and nibbles but you are requested to bring your own drinks. Tickets cost £12 and are available from

SPUC
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has produced postcards so that you can send a message to your MP urging him/her to vote against a dangerous Abortion Bill which is coming up in the House Commons on Tuesday 23rd October 2018. The Bill seeks to decriminalise abortion which would remove any effective legal protection for unborn babies and their mothers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Postcards are available from the back of church.

We have begun the Month of the Holy Rosary. During October the Church wishes to renew within the hearts of all God’s Faithful People, a love for this prayer. We know that the Holy Rosary is the most versatile of all the vocal prayers since, it can be prayed anytime and anywhere. Through the constant repetition of the words of Scripture - the Our Father and Hail Mary - we reflect simultaneously on the events of the life of Jesus in the Gospels; doing this through the eyes, hands and heart of Mary. Pray the Holy Rosary daily for peace in the Church and in the world; for holiness in Marriage and family life and for all our individual needs. Last weekend Pope Francis asked all Catholics to pray the Rosary during this month and also invoke St Michael the Archangel at the end, with the prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII especially for these turbulent times.

This Monday evening we begin our Journey of Faith. This series is a study of the entire Catholic Faith, and is perfect for those considering becoming Catholics. It provides a complete and faithful summary of the beliefs of the Catholic Church in a personal and understandable way. If you know someone who is interested in the Catholic Faith, then do encourage them to come; they will receive a warm welcome. The intention is that these Monday evenings are for non-Catholics. We will be introducing shortly a separate series of meetings for Catholic adults who are interested in deepening their Faith formation.
We welcome to the Parish this weekend Father Paul Roche CM who is making the annual Mission Appeal on behalf of the Vincentian Community. I encourage you to respond to this with your usual generosity. Our support - in prayer and practical help - is central to our service of the Church, at home and abroad.

Southend’s Leading Homeless Charity have a street collection on Saturday,
13th October 2018, 10am to 4pm, in Leigh-on-Sea at the junction of Broadway West and Elm Road. We would be very grateful for any help collecting for HARP. No experience required. Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Leaflets are available at the back of the Church giving instructions how to fill a shoebox with gifts for a child this Christmas, who otherwise would receive nothing. Filled and ready to collect shoeboxes should be taken to the nearest drop off point, Shoezone 80 High Street, Southend (opposite Lloyd’s Bank) tel no 01702 462662. Unfortunately Leigh Road Baptist Church is not an Operation Christmas Child drop off point this year. Alternatively, St Peter’s RC Church, 59 Eastwood Road North, Leigh on Sea, SS9 4BX, tel no 01702 522879 is a drop off point from mid October onwards. The shoeboxes will be going to Eastern Europe this year so hats, gloves etc are ideal box fillers. The closing date is Sunday 18th November. Please do not leave filled shoeboxes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church or Leigh Road Baptist Church.

Join the Deanery Stewards of the Gospel Group at Nazareth House for an inspiring TV quality exploration of Mary, past and present. Filmed on location in Walsingham, the Holy Land, Ephesus, Rome, Montserrat, Lourdes and Knock.6 sessions starting on Monday 8th October at Nazareth House – 7:30pm start in the main hall.
Session 1 – Chosen By God;
Session 2 – The First Disciple;
Session 3 – Mother Of All;
Session 4 – Queen of Heaven;
Session 5 – Help of christians.
Our final session will concentrate on Miracles.
Each film is 25 minutes approximately long to be followed by a Q&A discussion. Input from experts such as Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, Mgr John Armitage, Dr Sarah Boss,
Fr Jim McManus, Sr Catherine Droste and others… Entrance is free but a small donation towards the running costs of Nazareth House would be most welcome.

St Thomas More High School Open Days
Thursday 18th and Friday 19th October 2018 by appointment. Telephone 01702 344933 - for parents who have a son due to transfer to secondary school in September 2019 - come and see the school during a normal school day, meet the staff and pupils. Parents of boys who wish to apply to St Thomas More School for a place in September 2019 should complete the Local Education Authority single application form (SAF) and fill in the supplementary information form (SIF) that can be collected from the school or downloaded from the website

Irish Vincentian Missionary Tradition
St. Vincent de Paul the founder of The Vincentians – is rightly remembered as the heroic figure who transformed Seventeenth Century French society, through Christian charity. He also had concern for foreign missions, and sent missionaries far and wide: Poland, Algeria, Italy, Tunisia, Madagascar, also Scotland and Ireland.
St. Vincent de Paul is also the head of the Worldwide Vincentian Family which consists of a great many groups given to works of Charity – most notable the Daughters of Charity, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the AIC.
The Irish Vincentians have a long foreign mission tradition. In our time missionaries went to Nigeria, and there began the Vincentian Congregation which is now larger than that of Ireland. They have also been engaged in Ethiopia, Kenya and also in the former Soviet Union.
Fr. Paul Roche who visits us this weekend has worked as a missionary in both Nigeria and the Former USSR.
