The Liturgy of the Word for this Sunday reminds us that every Christian is called to extend the Kingdom of Christ. Every circumstance of life is a good opportunity for being about an extension of Faith in society and in the world. Jesus reproves the exclusive mentality of his disciples. He opens their eyes to a work which is wide-ranging in it's dimensions. As Christians, we never have a 'one party' mentality which would lead us to reject legitimate diversity in the work of the Church, or just focus on one group or apostolate. If you have the Heart of Christ, then diversity is always good and unity in diversity is a cause for rejoicing. The absolutely essential thing is that Christ be known and loved, because the Gospel has to reach every corner of the earth and touch every soul.

Next week has been allocated to us for a Mission Appeal which will be preached on behalf of the Vincentian Community. We will welcome to the Parish Fr Paul Roche CM, and I am sure you will respond to this with your usual generosity. We support a number of different Charities in our Parish, and each is very deserving of our help. We try to ensure that there is an equitable distribution of time and resources given to each of them, and I know that you will appreciate that no one of our Catholic Charities is given greater prominence than others. In addition to Cafod - which we continue to support in the usual ways - there are other deserving Charities that I would also encourage you to help, like Aid to the Church in Need which is a Pontifical Charity, that is, the special Charity of the Pope himself, to help those of our suffering brothers and sisters in parts of the Church where the Church is persecuted.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Leaflets are available at the back of the Church giving instructions how to fill a shoebox with gifts for a child this Christmas, who otherwise would receive nothing. Filled and ready to collect shoeboxes should be taken to the nearest drop off point, Shoezone 80 High Street, Southend (opposite Lloyd’s Bank) tel no 01702 462662. Unfortunately Leigh Road Baptist Church is not an Operation Christmas Child drop off point this year. Alternatively, St Peter’s RC Church, 59 Eastwood Road North, Leigh on Sea, SS9 4BX, tel no 01702 522879 is a drop off point from mid October onwards.
The shoeboxes will be going to Eastern Europe this year so hats, gloves etc are ideal box fillers. The closing date is Sunday 18th November.

Join the Deanery Stewards of the Gospel Group at Nazareth House for an inspiring TV quality exploration of Mary, past and present. Filmed on location in Walsingham, the Holy Land, Ephesus, Rome, Montserrat, Lourdes and Knock.
6 sessions starting on Monday 8th October at Nazareth House – 7:30pm start in the main hall.
Session 1 – Chosen By God;
Session 2 – The First Disciple;
Session 3 – Mother Of All;
Session 4 – Queen of Heaven;
Session 5 – Help of christians.
Our final session will concentrate on Miracles.
Each film is 25 minutes approximately long to be followed by a Q&A discussion. Input from experts such as Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, Mgr John Armitage, Dr Sarah Boss, Fr Jim McManus, Sr Catherine Droste and others…

St Thomas More High School Open Days
Thursday 18th and Friday 19th October 2018 by appointment. School Admission Forms for Primary & Secondary Schools
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Schools for the next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. Please come to the Parish Centre for these on Wednesday, 10th October between 6pm and 8pm or Wednesday, 17th October between 6pm and 7pm.
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.
CAFOD FAMILY HARVEST FAST DAY - Friday 5 October
2.6 billion people in the developing world have gained access to safe drinking water since 1990, but a further estimated 844 million still have no access to clean drinking water and 841 million have to make at least a 30minute round trip to find safe water. Through this Harvest Fast Day, Cafod is seeking to improve further the availability of safe drinking water for our brothers and sisters in countries such as Uganda. Cafod asks whether you can eat more simply on 5 October and the money you save could help to mend or install a water point for an entire village: a wonderful way of acting out our faith. Gift aid envelopes are at the back of the church for those who wish to contribute, along with more information about the work of Cafod. Thank you for your continued help and prayers,
St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) ‘Awareness Month’ 2018
The work of the SVP requires resources, with the Society’s greatest resource being its 9,500 Members. Have you considered getting involved? The commitment is to attending a weekly Wednesday evening meeting, 7.30 – 8.30pm, held in our Parish Centre and ideally, if your circumstance allows, to making one accompanied visit a week. It is rewarding work, bringing new friendships with both other SVP members and those they visit. If you are unable to consider becoming a Member please support us with your prayers.

Much of the Gospel of St Mark - which is being read at Mass these weeks - is concerned with the question of who Jesus is. In the particular Gospel of this Sunday, Jesus gives His disciples a lesson in how they are to govern. The word authority proceeds from the Latin word auctor, that is to say, the author or promotor, or source of something. It suggests the function of someone who has an oversight over a group or enterprise. In the Church, authority has to be exercised according to the model Jesus gives us: as one who has come to serve and not be served. Therefore, all authority in the Church is at the service of the greater good of assisting us to reach Heaven. Primarily this is the duty of the Pope, Bishops and Priests who have been given this mandate by the Church and who rule and govern in the name of Christ. This is why we should pray continually for those entrusted with this important but delicate charism.

Please pray especially for the Bishops of England and Wales this week, as they begin their visit Ad Limina Apostolorum. This takes place periodically and is the occasion when the Bishops of a country go on pilgrimage to Rome, to pray at the Tombs of the Apostles to meet the successor of St Peter, the Pope. It is also the occasion when they meet with the various Dicastories of the Holy See — the Roman Curia — and present reports of the work in each Diocese. They will meet and celebrate Holy Mass with the Pope in the course of the week too.
