Journey of Faith

A series of informal talks, designed to give an insight into the teachings and traditions of the Catholic church, continues on Monday 19th November at 8pm in the Parish Centre with Journey of Faith (The Paschal Mystery & Resurrection).  You are welcome to attend some or all of these talks; if you would like more information please speak to Fr Kevin.

Caritas Diocese of Brentwood

Today is the Second World Day of the Poor; Pope Francis’ words from this day last year continue to inspire us: “Blessed are the open hands that embrace the poor and help them: they are hands that bring hope.  Blessed are the hands that reach beyond every barrier of culture, religion and nationality, and pour the balm of consolation over the wounds of humanity.  Blessed are the open hands that ask nothing in exchange, with no “ifs” or “buts” or “maybes”: they are hands that call down God’s blessing upon their brothers and sisters.”

In that spirit, Caritas Diocese of Brentwood is launched by Bishop Alan today, to serve Essex and East London. The word caritas means charity, in the fullest sense of Christian love, and our Diocesan Caritas exists to support and encourage everyone who is working to put Christ’s love into action by supporting the ill, the poor and the marginalised. There is a new website (www.caritasbrentwood.org) and this is a great tool for people who want to be volunteers. Type in where you live and the kind of project where you would like to offer help, and the website will show you these projects in your area. Our Caritas is part of a national and international network, and once a year will bring together as many people as possible who are volunteering in the Diocese for a day of networking, sharing good practice, training and celebrating success. 

Bishop Alan says, “I am launching Caritas Diocese of Brentwood today full of hope about the difference it will make to all our work for social justice, in the name of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis asks us to ‘go to the edges’ and Caritas is full of projects which do just that. I encourage every parishioner to look at the website and to get involved in any way that they can.”

Our Diocese has also been accredited as a Living Wage Employer; the Living Wage lifts families out of poverty, and if you are an employer, or can influence your company, please look into it (www.livingwage.org.uk)  Please keep this new initiative in your prayers.

Reverse Advent Calendar

Our Live Simply group been approached by the RC Chaplain at Chelmsford prison for help. Many of their prisoners are being released at the end of their sentences without clothing, belongings or homes to go to.  We have adapted  this idea of a "reverse Advent calendar" so that we can "give" rather than "receive" in the run up to Christmas.  Reverse Advent Calendars are available at the back of Church.

Night of Light

As part of the 40 hours prayer this year, the Parish will be holding a 'Night of Light' on Friday, 30th November from 5pm to 8pm.  The lighting of the Christmas lights in Leigh is an ideal opportunity to reach out to all those passing by, inviting them to come into our church to light a candle and say a prayer.  The young people of the parish and the Parish Evangelisation Team will be hosting the evening.  You are all welcome to come and be part of the event by praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament for the people on the streets and those talking to them.  There will also be a live music ministry from Brentwood providing music.  If you would like to be involved with the Night of Light you will be very welcome. Volunteers are needed to be part of a team giving out handouts and talking to people in the street, showing people into the church, assisting them with lighting their candles and especially people to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Some training will be given by experienced missionaries who will be working with you. There is no age barrier.  If you are interested please contact Marian Long on 07484718389.

Parish Christmas Bazaar - Sunday 2nd December

The Bazaar will start after the 8am Mass and continue until 1.30pm.  We are in need of of your unwanted gifts, toiletries, bottles, bric-a-brac, raffle prizes, craft items.  Please leave donations at the back of Church. Thanks to everyone who has donated and offered to help so far.  If you need us to collect any donations, please call us, Sue 07816141492 or Angela 07940183452.  Grand Prize Draw tickets are available at the back of the Church now, please take and return the stubs and money to the Parish Office.

Sea of Voices Charity Concert

Programmes at £5 for admission to our Charity concert on Friday 23rd November commencing at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre are now available. These can be bought from the Parish Office during the week and from Darrell at the teas and coffees after this Sunday’s 9.30am mass in the Parish Centre.  We would be grateful for any raffle prizes for the evening. Alternatively please contact Darrell on 07825686249 or other choir members in the parish for programmes etc.  We are dedicating our concert to the memory of former choir member, Frank Maguire RIP, and according to Mrs Maguire’s wishes, all proceeds will go to the Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society.   Thank you!

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends in Christ

Across Europe this weekend, and up and down our land, commemorations are being made to mark the end of the Great War. At 12.30pm this Sunday church bells will ring out across the country to mark this centenary. We remember, and pray this weekend, for all those who have given their lives for the cause of freedom in both World Wars and in other conflicts. This commemoration reminds us each year of the urgent need to pray for peace in the world. At Fatima Our Blessed Mother asked the Church to pray the Rosary daily for peace. We still live in precarious times and peace can never be taken for granted. We implore Christ, the Prince of Peace, to give harmony and concord to our troubled world, that the atrocities of past generations may never be seen again in our day.

In the month of memorials for the Faithful Departed, we continue our intercession for those who have died. This week we celebrated our Annual Requiem for those who have died in the Parish in the last year. This Friday (16th) there will be a Sung Requiem Mass in the extra-ordinary form (Missal of 1962) for the Holy Souls. Next Sunday afternoon (18th) there will be the annual cemetery visit (Sutton Road, Southend) when the local Clergy will offer prayers and bless the graves of our loved-ones; please gather at the entrance at 3pm. During this month, so rich in reminders of eternal things - death, judgement, heaven, hell - let us keep alive in prayerful hope, all those who await the intercession of our prayer for their eternal life.

Caritas Diocese of Brentwood

This will be launched on the World Day of the Poor, Sunday 18th November 2018. The website www.caritasbrentwood.org (which will also be fully linked to the Diocesan website) will be a brilliant opportunity for Parish, Diocesan and national groups to have an online presence to showcase their work. Many small groups cannot afford to run or maintain their own websites, or simply do not have the time, so this will be a chance to showcase some superb but often hidden charitable work. The website will be structured in a way that attracts those looking to be volunteers, linking them with those who are seeking volunteers, and it will be well supported by Social Media. This is truly a chance for us to share the Gospel message and ensure that the good work that is being done throughout our Diocese is evident and generously shared.

Help for the Homeless this Winter

Southend Churches Winter Night Shelters (SCWNS) and Southend Borough Council have been running winter night shelters for the homeless for eight years. This year, the Catholic parishes of Sacred Heart and St John Fisher have agreed to provide a Night Shelter in Sacred Heart parish hall every Wednesday night, from Wednesday 5th December 2018 through to Wednesday 20th March 2019, and are requesting volunteer help and support from other Catholic parishes within our Deanery. 

Beds will be supplied for 20 people and a hot meal for another up to 10 'dinner only' guests. The Night Shelter welcomes both men and women although historically only two or three women have been hosted most nights. Sufficient 'overnight volunteers' have already been found but approximately 30 additional volunteers will be needed each week! 

There are a variety of tasks to be done commencing Wednesday evenings, 6pm to 10.30pm  - setting up beds, greeting guests, serving meals, socialising with guests; and then again Thursday mornings, 7am to 9.00am - preparing breakfast, cleaning the hall, laundering etc., ...as well as tasks yet to be identified!
