Dear Friends in Christ
In the Homily last weekend I spoke about the importance of creating silence, so that we can be receptive to God’s Word in our lives. 2020 has been designated in England and Wales as The Year of the Word - The God Who Speaks to Us. Over the next three Lenten Sundays we will be hearing those Gospels which direct our attention to the new life that Christ offers us through His Passion and Death: The Samaritan Woman at the Well this weekend, followed by the curing of the man born blind and the raising of Lazarus. Each of these encounters with Jesus speak to us of how step-by-step He leads us to faith and life in Him. Listen carefully as they are read and reflect on what they mean to us. Perhaps resolve to make one of our Lenten exercises the reading of God’s Word in the Gospel. There is nothing that will better nourish our prayer and spiritual life than a careful and pious reading of the Bible.

This week the decision was made nationally that we have reached the next stage (2) of the Coronavirus crisis. You can find the full guidelines on the Diocesan website (there is a link in this Newsletter). Certain practical changes have already been implemented since last weekend such as no Communion of the Precious Blood from the Chalice, and the recommendation that Communion be received in the hand. We need to bear in mind, when receiving Holy Communion, that our hands also carry a huge amount of bacteria (many pathogens are transmitted through the hands). Holy Communion under one kind can serve to remind us of the doctrine of concomitance i.e. that Our Lord is present, whole and entire - Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity - under the form of the Host or in the Chalice. By receiving under one kind we are receiving the whole Christ and are not deprived of any graces. Holy Communion under both kinds is simply a fuller expression of the symbol of the Sacrament. When it comes to the Sign of Peace, physical contact is discouraged. The Holy Water stoops will remain empty for the time-being, also as a precaution. We have also been advised to suspend using hymn books and Mass books. Where necessary there will be a disposal hymn sheets provided. Thank you for your understanding and consideration in these unusual times! Please pray the prayer (included in this Newsletter) for those who are suffering as a result of this epidemic.
The penitential and purifying nature of this Lenten season has been heightened for us with this crisis; let us try to respond with the demeanour of those who have faith and trust in the living God.

The Bereavement Support Group meets this Wednesday, 18th March in the Parish Centre, Bernadette Room at 2pm in a confidential & supportive environment.
Exhibition in Parish Centre
There will be an exhibition of Portraiture paintings in the St Clement room of the Parish Centre on Sunday March 29th from 12 noon until 4:30pm. Booklets of the exhibition will be available, free education bundles and badges of the paintings. There will also be ‘Draw your own portrait’ table! Admission is free and all donations will go to the Mental Health Foundation .

Gift Aid boxes are available for collection after Mass today. Please take a minute to read the note that has been put inside each box. It would be very helpful if everyone could make an effort to pick up their boxes both for standing orders and weekly offertory.
We would encourage anyone who has not got a box of envelopes, to ask for one today, as you leave the church, or perhaps set up a standing order. Gift Aid allows your weekly or monthly offering to be increased by 25p for every £1 you give, providing you are a tax payer. This is a very important source of income for our Parish and the charities we support.

Journey of Faith (RCIA)
A series of informal talks, designed to give an insight into the teachings and traditions of the Catholic church, will continue on Monday 16th March at 8pm in the Parish Centre with Journey of Faith (Morality & Social Justice). You are welcome to attend some or all of these talks; if you would like more information please speak to Fr Kevin.
Charity Fundraising
Dan and James McEvoy will be running the Brighton marathon on 19th April in memory of their dad, Jim McEvoy, whom many of you knew and loved.

OLL Ladies Group
We meet next on Thursday 19 March in the Parish Centre promptly at 10.30am until 12.30pm. Our guest Speaker is our very own, well known Bernard Arscott, who will be giving a talk on his experiences of being a councillor, so please come and show your support as Bernard is giving up his valuable time in what should be an interesting morning! All women in the Parish welcome. Subs only £1.00 plus a fun Raffle. (Don't forget to come early & enjoy coffee & chat before our guest speaker arrives!).
Restoration of the Reredos
The work began last week with the restoration of the first panel - The Annunciation - in time for the Feast on 25th March, but there is still further work to be done on it. The intention is to return the entire Reredos to what it would have looked like when it was first completed. The Re-dedication of England to Our Blessed Lady takes places on the Sunday following this Feast. We can keep this Mystery readily before our eyes in these days as we prepare for this Act of Re-dedication. Each day the praying of The Angelus reminds us of the moment when the good news of the Incarnation was announced to Mary. The others scenes on the Reredos will be completed later but if anyone would like to make a donation towards the cost of this work, please speak to Father Kevin.
Re-dedication of England to our Blessed Lady
On the occasion of the Re-dedication of England to Our Blessed Mother of 29th March, our Bishop has issued a Decree granting a Partial Indulgence to all those who participate in this Act of Consecration. The Decree states:
I grant a Partial Indulgence to all those within the Diocese of Brentwood who, beside the exclusion of all attachment to sin, even venial sin, on the 29th March, 2020, use the prescribed prayers for the Rededication of England to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, and who within a week prior or a week following this Act of Rededication make their sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and pray for the Holy Father’s intentions (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be). The Act of Rededication should take place publicly, within the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, but in keeping with canon law, it may also take place privately; and, within the Diocese of Brentwood, for those who reside in places where they cannot go to confession or communion at all or can do so only with great hardship, they may gain a partial indulgence without actual confession and communion, provided they have inner contrition and the resolution to go to these sacraments as soon as possible.
The Re-dedication can be a reminder that the mercy and grace of Almighty God is unlimited and that our deepest desires – the conversion of England to the Catholic Faith – will be fulfilled in God’s own time.
