Family Consecration to the Sacred Heart
This coming Friday is the solemnity of the Sacred Heart. At 10am on Friday an act of consecration to the Sacred Heart for families will be live-streamed (and available to watch later) on the diocese's Marriage and Family Life Facebook page.
In the days leading up to this and following, couples from around the diocese will be sharing via the Facebook page their own inspirations for living out their vocation as spouses and parents in the domestic church.
You do not need to be signed up to Facebook to access this page.
Serving the Homeless
We have managed to secure a grant of £2,500 from the Albert Gubay Trust; this will be used over the coming weeks for this important Charity in our local area. We are most grateful to the Trust.
Reopening of the Church
We are now allowed to open the church every day for a period of private prayer!

We are now allowed to open the church every day for a period of private prayer. This is not yet for liturgy or any form of group prayer.
Our church will re-open on Monday 15 June for private prayer only. It will open Monday-Saturday 11am-1pm.
Parishioners must enter by the north (courtyard) door and exit by the south porch (Leigh Road). You must use hand sanitiser twice: on entering and exiting. Please only sit in the designated pews, and please observe social distancing (2 metres apart).
Please do not attend if you have had any symptoms of coronavirus in the previous 7 days, or a member of your household has in the last 14 days: please self-isolate.
Please be patient while we adjust to the new circumstances.
To open the church safely, we must have two stewards in attendance at all times the church is open. Every day, at the end of this period, we must clean the church.
We need volunteers for stewarding and cleaning each day to keep the church open. We will provide PPE (personal protective equipment). I know that you will be generous in responding to this appeal as we are very eager to visit Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
You should not come to church to volunteer if:
you should be shielding—you are vulnerable due to age or underlying health issues
you are shielding someone else—you live with someone who is vulnerable

Dear friends in Christ
The central tenet of the Christian Faith is that God is One and God is Three: The Most Blessed Trinity. Last Sunday — Pentecost — I spoke in the Homily about the gift of languages which the Holy Spirit bestowed on Pentecost Day: the gift to communicate the Faith with all peoples on the earth. This is carried-out through the ministry of the Church, Christ’s Body on earth. To be able to communicate the faith of Christ and the Church, in the language of those to whom we are speaking, is what the gift of tongues means. It is tongues and language enabling the disciples of Jesus to establish heart-to-heart communication with the peoples of the world. This is because the Holy Spirit Himself is nothing but communication. For the Spirit is quite simply the love that is communicated between the Father and the Son. He is the breath. That is what Spiritus Sanctus means: the holy breath that is blown back and forth between the Father and the Son. So on this Sunday we celebrate that intimacy which is the very life of God. But there is more: through the mystery of Christ’s Body — the Church — we are incorporated into that life. This happens for the first time at Baptism and is renewed and deepened every time we receive a Sacrament. Communication with any one of the Three Divine Persons is communion with God Himself. Speaking of that life we receive through the Sacraments will, I know, only remind us of the pain of separation that we have felt for many weeks. I continue to urge you to be patient and tenacious in your anticipation of the public worship of the Church commencing again. God is waiting — much more than we are, or can imagine — for us to be drawn back into His Trinitarian life. May this Trinity Sunday, and the Solemnity of Corpus Christi next Sunday, prepare us, and awaken within us profoundly, the desire for God.
During this month of June, we go to the Heart of Jesus saying often:
Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place all our trust in You! Sweet Heart of Jesus, we implore, make us love You, more and more!

Ann Burry and her family — with Theresa and Jo — would like to thank everyone in the Parish for the great kindness that we have all been shown, following the sudden death of Ann's husband, and our brother, Peter. We have been overwhelmed by the love prayers and support given by so many of you.
For those of you that did not know Peter himself, you may remember the beautiful garden that he made in the Lady Chapel for our first Flower Festival.
He will be so greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Serving the Homeless
We would like you to know that during this period of lockdown, although we can no longer organise events, we are continuing to help local groups that are working with the homeless. In April we gave £1,000 to Westcliff SVP society as they had taken on the task of cooking evening meals for the rough sleepers who had been put into bed and breakfast accommodation by the council.
In May we were able to give the SVP a further £1,500 and a member of our committee began to help with cooking the meals. Some 140-160 meals are provided each night. A £5,000 donation that we gave to Southend YMCA in December for their building fund, is now having to be used instead for emergency funding for their young clients.
We are also continuing to give £250 per month to HARP towards the cost of meals for their clients.
Without our charity fundraisers this year, we are only able to continue this with the very generous donations that we receive from you and the income from our 200 club.

Cafod and Coronavirus
Cafod continues to undertake work with our brothers and sisters across the world at this time, especially helping to support communities with the provision of safe water and to communicate the message about the importance of hand washing. Many developing countries are facing huge pressures on very basic medical resources, and Cafod is looking to help where it can. Please remember Cafod's work in your prayers.
You can find out more about this work on the Cafod website. It also provides details about an appeal Cafod has launched which will replace their harvest fast day appeal normally scheduled later in the year.
Society for the Protection of Unborn Children
Please contact Sir David Amess MP urgently, with a request to speak out against regulations that impose an extreme new abortion regime on Northern Ireland. The new abortion regulations will be voted upon by the House of Commons in the next few weeks. We need to do everything to defeat this measure. A letter or brief message to Sir David could make all the difference.

Pentecost is the great Day of our birth as The Church!
Dear friends in Christ
Pentecost is the great Day of our birth as The Church! At this time we pray with renewed earnestness: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth. On this Solemnity we can pray that God the Holy Spirit will breath new life and freshness upon our world. Only the breath of God can cleanse and heal the uncleanness that we have experienced over these last months. The fire of the Holy Spirit is a purifying flame, as we pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. May the warmth and life the Holy Spirit brings, be experienced by all of us who are Baptised, that we may be on fire with the life of God!
I am thinking today of our young adults who should have been Confirmed. As with Baptisms, First Holy Communions, Marriages and Receptions into the Church, their deferral has been out of our control but they will happen as soon as we are given the all-clear to proceed. Two of the fruits of the Holy Spirit are patience and forbearance; we have had to show these in abundance since lockdown began mid-Lent! We must and can continue a little while longer as we can begin to think about opening our churches soon for private visits and prayer; later there will be a gradual return, albeit with restricted numbers, to Mass and the other Sacraments.
During the month of June — month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus — I will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in the church each evening at 6pm; as in May, please join with me at home on the live-stream. I wish you a pleasant week ahead, and if you are fortunate enough to be working, every blessing for your work. May God bless you all wherever you are!
