Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society has registered for the Fun Walk which normally takes place at the Barleylands Farm site in Billericay. This year, participants and parish groups are invited to walk 2k or 5k anywhere they wish at any time during September and ask for sponsorship from friends and family to help support our work. Site Manager Vacancy
The Diocese is looking for a Site Manager for the Cathedral Site to manage the routine maintenance of the buildings and grounds at the Cathedral Site. A job description is available upon request but the key elements are as follows:
Overall premises management
• Maintain the premises in a safe and healthy condition
• Identify anything requiring repair or maintenance and action as required
• Ensure all matters are logged as appropriate
• Liaise with Contractors as required

Dear friends in Christ
The question that Jesus puts to all His followers - and He asked it for the first time of the Apostles - is: Who am I? If we can answer that question with the same certain faith of Saint Peter, then we belong to Him. From the beginning of Christianity, Peter - the Pope - has been given primacy amongst the followers of Jesus because of his role of being the centre and unity of our Faith. Throughout the Acts of the Apostles we read how Saint Peter was the one who was deferred to whenever there was an important question or matter to be settled. Right through to the present day, we see in the person of the Pope the personal presence of Jesus in His Church. Our veneration of the Pope has nothing to do with his human, intellectual or spiritual qualities. Our love of the Vicar of Christ comes from the fact that he has been chosen by God and set over the Church as the Universal Shepherd and as Servant of the Servants of God. We have come to expect so much of the Pope in modern times. The truth is that the Pope is not a CEO, statesman or superstar; not an expert on everything under the sun, nor a living saint The fact that the world has come to expect this of the Pope means that he comes under intense scrutiny like any person in the public eye. For a faithful Catholic, the Pope is simply Peter, the Rock on which Christ built His Church. We therefore pray daily for the Pope: in the Holy Mass and we should keep him foremost in our prayer intentions. Hearing the Gospel of Peter’s confession of faith in the Gospel of this Sunday, is a reminder to us: can I profess with Peter my utter faith and belief in Who Jesus is? As soon as I recognise with Peter, that Jesus is the Son of the Living God, then everything else falls into place.

Contactless Giving
Many of us no longer carry cash. Contactless paying is becoming increasingly popular and is more hygienic. From the first weekend in September it will be possible to make contactless offerings to the Church. This can be done in the usual manner and there will be a device at the back of church with a Steward to assist. Simply touch an amount shown on the screen (or enter another figure if you wish to give a particular amount) then tap your card or ‘phone to register payment. (The device will be sanitised by the Steward.) You should also Gift Aid amounts if you are a taxpayer (which adds an additional 25%). You need to enter your name and address on the first occasion and after that your details are remembered for future giving. The best way of making your weekly offering is by using the envelopes or standing order but the contactless facility will enable us to donate at anytime if we don’t have cash.

This year we have the privilege of being able to celebrate Mary's Assumption into Heaven on a Sunday: the feast is transferred from 15th. What we celebrate on this Day each year is summarised by Pope Pius XII when in 1950 he made definitive this doctrine that had been held unofficially by Catholics from the beginning: So then, the great Mother of God, so mysteriously united to Jesus Christ from all eternity by the same decree of predestination, immaculately conceived, an intact virgin throughout her divine motherhood, a noble associate of our Redeemer as he defeated sin and its consequences, received, as it were, the final crowning privilege of being preserved from the corruption of the grave and, following her Son in his victory over death, was brought, body and soul, to the highest glory of heaven, to shine as Queen at the right hand of that same Son, the immortal King of Ages.
If we ask the reason for this highest of privileges accorded to Mary, we look to the early Saints of the Church. In their sermons and speeches on the feast day of the Assumption of the Mother of God, the holy Fathers and the great Doctors of the Church were speaking of something that the faithful already knew and accepted: all they did was to bring it out into the open, to explain its meaning and substance in other terms. Above all, they made it most clear that this feast commemorated not merely the fact that the blessed Virgin Mary did not experience bodily decay, but also her triumph over death and her heavenly glory, following the example of her only Son, Jesus Christ. All that the holy Fathers say refers ultimately to Scripture as a foundation, which gives us the vivid image of the great Mother of God as being closely attached to her divine Son and always sharing His lot.
This weekend we resume the full and normal schedule of Masses and Services in the church which have been suspended or partly suspended, since March. We will only be able to maintain this timetable if there are sufficient volunteers to steward and clean the church at each Mass; also, that there is a full complement of reservations for each of the Sunday Masses. We are very grateful to those who have been consistently generous with their help, but some more Parishioners might be good enough to offer help too.
On this Solemnity of Mary’s Assumption, we ask her prayers, her motherly intercession and protection upon us as individuals and as Parish Family. God bless you, together with His Holy Mother!
