Serving the Homeless & The Homely Project

On Thursday 25th March the new Homely Project was officially opened at the YMCA Southend.  Due to Covid restrictions this was an online event but we were delighted to be able to take part.  I am especially pleased to be able to tell you that the new suite of rooms, that will help vulnerable young people make a fresh start, have been named in memory of Jim McEvoy.

Jim was a great supporter of Serving the Homeless, helping us to provide the music at our Christmas Concerts and supporting our events. He worked tirelessly to help the youngsters in the town, working on the SOS Bus, as a Street Pastor and in the Night Shelters, and so it is very fitting that the new rooms should bear his name. I know that Fran and his boys are very pleased that money donated in Jim’s memory has been used by us in this project. We are happy to have played a part in this development which has been supported by Land Aid.

We would like to thank all of you who continue to support the work of Serving the Homeless through your donations and prayers.

Jo Ronan, Chair, Serving the Homeless

Church Heating

There have been some issues with the church boiler and heating system over the last week which involved a broken valve and pump. The heating engineers are examining whether it is more cost effective to replace the broken parts or hold-off until the Summer when a new boiler was due to be installed. Thankfully the weather is improving but apologies if the church isn’t the normal cosy temperature we are used to!

Gift Aid

Boxes of Gift Aid envelopes for the financial year 2021/22 will be available for collection this weekend,

If you wish to join the Gift Aid scheme and do require an envelope for your weekly offering, you can complete the necessary declaration either online lourdesleigh.org/gift-aid or alternatively there is a form at the back of the Church which, when completed, should be returned to the parish office.

An alternative to envelope use would be to set up a Standing Order, an enquiry form is available on the Parish website. Alternatively a Standing Order mandate form is available at the back of the Church.

Fifth Sunday of Lent

Dear friends in Christ

The tone of Lent shifts in the last two weeks into Passiontide.

Dear friends in Christ

The tone of Lent shifts in the last two weeks into Passiontide. Through the liturgy—the prayers and readings—we are gradually drawn into the mysteries that brought about our salvation. Next Sunday—Palm Sunday—we begin Holy Week listening to the Passion (shorter version) according to St Mark. As I explained last week, the liturgies of Holy Week are going to be somewhat reduced in their elements and in duration; this is to ensure that we keep within the Covid restrictions. However, we must be grateful: this time last year there was nobody in church and most of Lent and Easter was celebrated behind closed doors. A large part of our participation in Holy Week and Easter is a reading of the Gospel. If, for whatever reason, you cannot attend church in person, try to follow all the events of Holy Week on the livestream and by reading the Passion narratives. The Saints tell us that we ought to imagine ourselves being present at each of the events. If we do this prayerfully it will change our lives. All of the virtues necessary to live the Christian life are present in the Passion. Jesus teaches us by his words and gestures, how to be patient, long-suffering, meek, courageous and humble. Pray for some particular virtue you need at this time, especially the grace to follow Jesus with the crosses of life. Try to see all of the trials and tragedies we experience as a participation in the suffering of Our Lord. The whole drama of the Passion leads infallibly to the glory of the Resurrection. The same for us: after the suffering comes the glory.

With every blessing!

Msgr Kevin Hale

Walking for Water - CAFOD

Thank you to those who have sponsored my walk or are keeping me in their prayers.

My challenge this Lent was to walk 400,000 steps in solidarity with Abdella and others like him who must walk miles every day to collect water for their family. To date (18th March) I have achieved 297,618 steps, a little behind daily target due to family emergencies - although I am confident of making them up. This of course highlighted the fact that I can ‘rest’ for a day or two if needs be, he cannot. The money raised will help to build a well for Abdella’s village so he doesn’t have to walk the gruelling miles each day for the essential gift of water.

Thank you again for your support to date. There is still time to donate at the link below. Only 102,382 steps to go!!! Cathy (Sweeney) CAFOD Volunteer.
