OLL Ladies Group
Would Ladies who regularly attend the Group please note that next week, Thursday 18th July, instead of our usual early Meeting we will be celebrating our “end of term” lunch. Entrance is by ticket only in the Parish Centre at 12Noon for 12.30. We are sorry to disappoint but all tickets are now sold. We are very pleased to welcome back Lucy ( on the Violin) and Becky ( on the Cello ) who will entertain us with their beautiful music.

St Vincent's Centre, Southend
The Mayor’s Nominated Charity for 2022/23 is St Vincent’s Centre Southend and there are various upcoming events. Your participation would make a huge difference where all proceeds will go towards restocking their food bank.
Dinner & Auction - Saturday 16th November - Black Tie Event- Roslin Beach Hotel. Ticket Price £95.00 inc. welcome drink, 3 course dinner, live music & charity auction.
Christmas Afternoon Tea on 2nd December
All proceeds from these events will go towards restocking our food bank and providing general support to those we serve. We kindly ask for your support by booking a table at one or both of these events. Each table can accommodate up to 12 people, and businesses or groups are welcome to share a table if a full one isn't feasible.

St Bernard's High School Minibus Fundraiser

The Second Reading of the Mass this weekend contains the famous passage of St Paul in which he boasts about his weakness. After he speaks about his achievements for Christ, he then declares that to prevent him from becoming proud he was given a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan to beat me and stop me from getting too proud! Saint Paul asked God several times to relieve him of this suffering (we do not know if it was a mental, physical or moral suffering) and he received this sublime response: My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness. At times, or perhaps all of the time, we experience weakness and suffering in our lives. Even our frailty and weaknesses can be turned into something good. In his commentary on this passage, Saint Thomas Aquinas explains that God can sometimes allow certain evils of a physical or moral kind precisely so as to draw from them a greater or more necessary good. God will never abandon us in the midst of temptation. Our very weakness helps us to have greater trust, to seek refuge in God urgently, to ask Him for greater strength and to be more humble. Any trial or temptation in this life can be the source of so much good, because in undergoing them we will show our Lord that we need Him and that we love Him. We can confidently apply to ourselves the words of Psalm 91: He will give his angels charge over you, to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. Because He clings to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my Name.
We are grateful to all those who arranged and made possible the Flower Festival this weekend. The theme of Prayer was an inspiration to all who came to enjoy some colour on an otherwise grey weekend!

New Lectionary-Advent 2024
The books containing the Scripture Readings at Mass have been revised in translation. We shall now be using the English Standard Version—Catholic Edition of the Bible and the Abbey Psalter for the Psalms. These translations will bring us to a more faithful rendering of the texts. The new Lectionary has been produced to a very high standard as being worthy of the Word of God and the Sacred Liturgy, and this is reflected in the price tag! The four volume Lectionary which will be used at Mass costs £695. The Book of the Gospels (decorated Processional Edition) which will be used in Solemn Masses, is £395. If anyone would like to donate these books it would be much appreciated, and they could be given in memory of someone, or from a family, and they would be inscribed inside accordingly.
The Mass books used in the church will also have to be updated. However, we propose to order a reduced number of these since many of us when coming to Mass use a Missal, portable device or a copy of Magnificat as a liturgical aid. Copies of the new People's Missal will be available in due course from The Catholic Truth Society.

Marriage and Family Life
This coming Saturday, 13th July, is the occasion of the Annual Mass for Marriage and Family Life which will be celebrated by the Bishop in Brentwood Cathedral at 3pm. About half-a-dozen couples from our Parish will attend who have a significant Anniversary this year. Please pray for them and give thanks to God for the witness of the Family in these times when this witness is ever more powerful.
