Fairtrade—Sunday 9th March—8.30am-11.30am

The Fairtrade stall will resume this sunday—9th March.  Please come and support this initiative, helping our brothers and sisters around the world who struggle to survive. Fairtrade products are sold to give the farmers, together with other projects a fair price for their work. Products are produced in a sustainable way, helping to look after our common home. The Pope is asking us to be 'Pilgrims of Hope' to others and this is a great way of demonstrating that.  Thank you for all the support you have given us to date.

Assisted Suicide Bill update

Last year, MPs narrowly voted to support Kim Leadbeater’s dangerous assisted suicide Bill at Second Reading.

There’s still time to stop it.

The Independent newspaper, shows that at least 36 MPs who supported the Bill made it clear they did so only to allow time for further debate or they have concerns that mean they won’t commit to supporting the Bill at Third Reading.

With the vote passing by a margin of 55, just 28 MPs switching their stance to oppose the Bill would ensure it is defeated at Third Reading.

With more awareness of the serious risks, arising from the committee stage, many MPs could change their position.

If enough do, we can defeat this Bill at Third Reading and stop it from becoming law.

You can make a difference right now, by contacting your MP, to say, vote NO, at Third Reading.

It only takes a couple of minutes of your time, using our easy-to-use tool, which you can access by clicking the button below.

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends in Christ

This Sunday is the last before the start of Lent—in the traditional calendar Quinquagesima Sunday—fifty days until Easter!

Dear friends in Christ

This Sunday is the last before the start of Lent—in the traditional calendar Quinquagesima Sunday—fifty days until Easter! So the countdown is on as we approach Lent which prepares us for Easter. Saint Paul in the second reading of the Mass this Sunday, teaches us that after death our bodies will be clothed in immortality, as death is finally conquered by Jesus Christ. We are not simply flesh and bones—matter—but we possess an immortal nature which will come to fulness of life at the resurrection of the body. Lent is a reminder that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, which is why we focus a little more on this important truth during these forty days ahead. By expressing prayer of the body through our various penitential acts, we ensure that we keep in mind the relative importance of these temples God has give us for just a time. This Lent is an important one, since it occurs during a Jubilee Year. If we have not already done so, we might like to take-up some of the suggestions that the Church has proposed to us for this Year of Hope (see separate item). I remind you also that in just over a week we shall begin the Parish Mission. Essentially during Lent, we want to bring our wills into union with what God wills for us. Each day of Lent can be like a blank sheet which we can fill in with an account of wonderful things. We may start with good intentions, but our holiness will be seen in the way that we persevere day by day in prayer, self-sacrifice and good deeds. May God bless us in this time of special grace and conversion. May we arrive at Easter with hearts and minds renewed!

God bless you!

Msgr Kevin Hale

We pray for our sick

The Sick List is available on the website main menu, under Worship.

We pray for the sick of our parish

Father,
by the power of your Spirit
you have filled the hearts of your faithful people
with gifts of love for one another.
Hear the prayers we offer for our relatives and friends.
Give them health of mind and body
that they may do your will with perfect love.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Jubilee Year

The ‘Jubilee Indulgence’ is specific to a Jubilee Year.  Plenary indulgences obtained during the Jubilee Year can also be applied to souls in purgatory making it possible to obtain two plenary indulgences in a day with one being applied to the deceased. For the Jubilee Year 2025 the indulgence has a focus on pilgrimage as “Pilgrims of Hope”.  The indulgence can be obtained by completing any of the following acts (work) as part of the usual conditions listed above:

Make a pilgrimage to any designated church or place such as Rome or one of three churches in our Diocese: Brentwood Cathedral, the Shrine of Our Lady of Light at the Catholic Church in Clacton-on-Sea; St Antony of Padua Church, Forest Gate.

Perform works of mercy, such a visiting the sick, giving help to those who are homeless or hungry.

Undertaking penance, such as abstaining from some food or drink, giving up the use of social media, and regaining the sense of Friday abstinence.

Attending a retreat or a Parish Mission.

I hope that his outline of one important aspect of this Jubilee Year will inspire and encourage you to be generous with Our Lord and so gain and enjoy the spiritual benefits our Mother the Church offers us in these days of Jubilee.

Days of Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of obligatory fasting throughout the world (Can. 1251). The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year (Can. 1252).

According to Canon Law, abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year (Can. 1252).

Those under 14 years of age, the sick, the elderly and frail, pregnant women, are not required to abstain.
