Dear friends in Christ
According to the teaching of Jesus, and the experience of the Christian Faith lived-out, the cost of discipleship is not less than everything. This is the message proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass this weekend. Jesus wants our whole heart, not just a part of it; our entire commitment and not a measured-commitment. This is the supreme undertaking of our lives, even if sometimes we may think that we had no choice in the matter. God has called each one of us by name to follow His Divine Son, Jesus Christ. To do this, and to do this well, we need to know all the means available to us, and how to use them. We also need to be aware of what is lacking in order to ask Our Lord for it with confidence. Each day we should examine our lives—our consciences—in the light of what has been given to us, and how we are corresponding to the call Jesus makes to us daily: follow Me!
We are once again beginning a new academic year, and we wish all those who work in our Schools a full and fruitful year ahead. Next Sunday is actually designated Education Sunday throughout our country. It is a day for us to reflect on the way we form our young people in the image and likeness of Christ; and how we communicate the essential and vital Truths of our Catholic Faith in a clear and comprehensive way. It is a Day for us to pray for all those entrusted with the education and formation of our Youth, that they may use their own talents and evangelical insights to let the unsurpassed glory of our Catholic Faith shrine through.
God bless you all, especially those who return to the halls of academia this week!
