Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Friends in christ
As we conclude our Parish Mission this weekend, I thank God for the graces and blessings - seen and unseen - that we have experienced during this week. I thank in particular Abbot Hugh Allan and Fr Stephen Morrison for having given so generously of their time and talents, in guiding us through the liturgies and preaching of these days; they have been inspirational! All of us who made the time and effort to attend daily Mass and the Services of the Mission will have been helped in the living of our Catholic lives. Most importantly, we have been able to spend more time with our Blessed Lord in prayer, at Mass and in the Sacramental life of the Church.

Most importantly, we have been able to spend more time with our Blessed Lord in prayer, at Mass and in the Sacramental life of the Church. For those who did not or could not attend for whatever reason, you can listen to the talks and reflections via the website; many of our housebound and others in distant places have been linked-in by this means during the week.
A huge thanks to all those who have assisted in any way, big or small, by prayer or action, in making the Mission a grace-filled time for us all: those who helped arrange the liturgies and provide music; those who provided the refreshments in the Parish Centre each morning and all those behind the scenes who worked so diligently. We now have the foundations set to move forward in a more generous spirit of evangelisation. We can talk more about how we might go about this in the weeks and months ahead. For now, let us be grateful for what we have received and stand affirmed in our Faith which is our everything.

Serving the Homeless
Sincere thanks to everyone who supported our Jazz Evening last Saturday. This raised a profit of £545, which will go towards the YMCA's project ‘Mary's House’.
Over the past six months we have continued to spend £200 a month on fresh food for the Day Centre, Night Shelter and houses run by HARP; paid for temporary overnight accommodation for two clients until they could be housed; bought ten sets of clothing for young clients at HARP as well as additional underwear and jeans; financed the cost of providing bedding for twenty new beds in the women's hostel; provided £500 towards the cost of a shower for LRBC's winter night shelter; supported the suspended meal scheme at the Oasis Cafe and supported the Southend YMCA latest project "Mary's House".
Our next fundraising event is "Songs from the Musicals" featuring Elizabeth Upsher and the Southend YMCA on Saturday 18th November in the Parish Centre. Tickets cost £12 and include an Italian buffet supper. Please bring your own drinks. Tickets are available from Linda 558217, Theresa 335922 or Nina 472536.
School Admission Forms
Parents wishing to apply to Catholic Primary Schools for the next academic year are required to obtain a Letter of Catholic Practise from their Parish Priest. This must be requested from your Parish Priest in person and only one per child will be issued. Please come to the Parish Centre for these on Saturday, 28th October between 2pm and 4pm or Sunday 29th October between 4pm and 5pm.
These are issued only to practising Catholics (i.e. those who attend weekly Mass). Furthermore, this practise of the Faith will be viewed over a period of time and not just the weeks prior to an application. Parish Priests may also look at the date of Baptism, noting those children who have been Baptised soon after birth as compared to those Baptised with proximity to school age. This is a matter of justice to all involved in applying for places in our Schools. Our schools are often oversubscribed and in order to be fair, preference will justly be given to those who live and practise the Faith as well as who contribute to the life of the Church through the various ways in which that support is given. If you are not a practising Catholic this Certificate will not be given; you may still apply to a Catholic School but your application will considered under another category for Admissions.
Blessing of Graves
Fr Graham Smith will be Blessing Graves at Sutton Road Cemetery on Sunday,12th November from 3.00pm.

Dear friends in Christ
This weekend we begin our Parish Mission! Having prepared these last months through prayer, we welcome Fathers Hugh Allan and Stephen Morrison who will guide us through these days of prayer and spiritual renewal. Fr Hugh & Fr Stephen - Norbertine Canons from the Priory in Chelmsford - are good friends of the Parish: Fr Hugh (who is the Titular Abbot of Beeleigh and Apostolic Administrator of the Falkland Islands et al) preached for my thirtieth anniversary of Ordination) and Fr Stephen (who has family members in our Parish) preached earlier this year for the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. I hope they will enjoy the week with us and help us together grow in our love and devotion to Jesus Christ and His Church. May God bless us all in these days of Parish Mission!
