Help for the Homeless this Winter

Southend Churches Winter Night Shelters (SCWNS) and Southend Borough Council have been running winter night shelters for the homeless for eight years. This year, the Catholic parishes of Sacred Heart and St John Fisher have agreed to provide a Night Shelter in Sacred Heart parish hall every Wednesday night, from Wednesday 5th December 2018 through to Wednesday 20th March 2019, and are requesting volunteer help and support from other Catholic parishes within our Deanery.

Beds will be supplied for 20 people and a hot meal for another up to 10 'dinner only' guests. The Night Shelter welcomes both men and women although historically only two or three women have been hosted most nights. Sufficient 'overnight volunteers' have already been found but approximately 30 additional volunteers will be needed each week!

There are a variety of tasks to be done commencing Wednesday evenings, 6pm to 10.30pm  - setting up beds, greeting guests, serving meals, socialising with guests; and then again Thursday mornings, 7am to 9.00am - preparing breakfast, cleaning the hall, laundering etc., ...as well as tasks yet to be identified!

Potential volunteers are asked to contact Sue Tokley, Parish Secretary, in Sacred Heart/St John Fisher parish office on 01702 465720 or parish@catholicsouthend.org.ukFrancis O'Brien - OLOL Parish SVP Conference

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends in christ

This Sunday's Gospel recounts the request made by the Apostles James and John: they wanted to hold places of honour in His Kingdom. Jesus used the opportunity to teach them a lesson in service:  I have come not to be served but to serve. His whole life was a service to others. His doctrine is a constant appeal to mankind to forget self and live for others. He went throughout Palestine serving each person He met along the way.  The Church is the continuation of His saving mission in this world.  Her very reason for existing is to serve mankind through the preaching of the Word and celebration of the Sacraments.

As Pope St Paul VI (who was canonised last Sunday) said: Sharing the noblest aspirations of men and suffering where She sees them not satisfied  she wishes to help them attain their full flowering, and that is why She offers men what She posses as her characteristic attribute - a global vision of man and of the human race. As we seek to imitate the Lord, we stand also ready to serve, not expecting anything in return. We have to serve even those - especially those - who do not appreciate our help.  This is to make us truly Christ-like in our discipleship.  By this way of living, we will indeed inherit the place of honour in God’s Kingdom one day in Heaven!

In this month of the Holy Rosary, with Mary’s prayers, may we continue to be generous, selfless disciples, of the Lord.

God bless bless you!

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Leaflets are available at the back of the Church giving instructions how to fill a shoebox with gifts for a child this Christmas, who otherwise would receive nothing.  Filled and ready to collect shoeboxes should be taken to the nearest drop off point, Shoezone 80 High Street, Southend (opposite Lloyd’s Bank) tel no 01702 462662.  Unfortunately Leigh Road Baptist Church is not an Operation Christmas Child drop off point this year.  Alternatively, St Peter’s RC Church, 59 Eastwood Road North, Leigh on Sea, SS9 4BX, tel no 01702 522879 is a drop off point from mid October onwards.  The shoeboxes will be going to Eastern Europe this year so hats, gloves etc are ideal box fillers.  The closing date is Sunday 18th NovemberPlease do not leave filled shoeboxes at Our Lady of Lourdes Church or Leigh Road Baptist Church.
