First Sunday of Lent Sunday 10th March 2019
Dear Friends in Christ
The first Sunday of Lent brings us into the desert with Jesus. He goes there for forty days and nights to prepare for the ordeals ahead. Whilst there, He is tempted. There are three classic temptations that He faces: to satisfy his bodily desires; to worship a false God; and to use His power for His own purpose. By resisting each of the temptations of the Evil One, Jesus emerges with a stronger will. During Lent we too are engaged in a warfare, a struggle. It is a warfare against the powers that seek to conform us to pleasure, wealth and power. Armed with the threefold weapons of prayer, fasting and charity, we too can emerge fortified and ready for spiritual warfare. There is no holiness possible without struggle, constant struggle.
St Thomas More said that we cannot get to heaven in feather beds! The task is unremitting, and the rest and reward will come in Heaven.

Lent is the annual pilgrimage we make towards Easter, and it always has God at the centre. We will all have ways that we have discerned and chosen to help us discipline the body during this season. Foremost among the spiritual weapons we use is prayer. Let us emerge at Easter as better souls of prayer; having conversed with God intimately each day for whatever period of time is possible for us. Let us get used to saying ’no’ to the superfluous needs of our body so that we can become fitter in the fight. May we also extend the hand of charity to those in need, by giving of our time or material resources to help them, remembering the words of Jesus: You did it to Me.

Serving the Homeless
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Homelessness Day Collection in Jan. £1,475. 65 was raised.
We would also like to thank those who supported the Jazz night last Saturday, and David Barlow and the band, who gave their services for free. This allowed us to raise £1,100.
The money raised by these events has enabled us to fund a group of clients of the Homeless Centre to go on a conservation work course. They will have the opportunity to learn new practical and social skills. For some it will be their first opportunity to leave Southend and experience a totally different environment. We hope it will build self-confidence and self-belief in those taking part.
Thank you again for your continuing support for ‘Serving the Homeless’.

New Club Secretary needed for Margueriteville CMC
Due to personal circumstances, and after ten years service, I am standing down as the Margueriteville Country Music Club secretary in April. In order for this monthly fundraising club to continue I am looking for any parishioners who would like to run it. If no-one comes forward the club will close after April.
We still have parishioners who look after the door entry and run the raffle, and club members help with teas and coffees and raffle donations.
We have managed to raise over £9,000 for the Parish Centre since I started the club in July 2009 and still have a full programme left for this year (except for May). Novena to St Joseph - Sunday 10th to Tuesday 19th March 2019 – OLI Church, Chelmsford
Our Lady Immaculate Parish, Chelmsford, is celebrating a novena to St Joseph to pray for the Church, for vocations to the diocese of Brentwood and for all your intentions. The novena to St Joseph is from 10th until 19th March. Each day of the novena there will be Mass at 7pm (preceded by confessions at 6.30pm) and the Mass will end with the novena prayers to St Joseph. Please join us in our novena prayers.

CAFOD Lenten Family Fast Day - Friday 15 March
Thank you for your continued prayers and support for Cafod’s work. This Friday 15th please consider eating a simple meal in solidarity with those children and adults who live amidst severe drought, floods and storms and who struggle daily to eat enough to survive. Any donation you are able to make to Cafod assists with projects to turn these people’s lives around. Together we can reach out to all of God’s family. Donation envelopes are at the back of the church and can be returned next weekend. Thank you.
Gift Aid Envelopes
New boxes of envelopes for those in the Gift Aid Scheme will be available for collection on 16th/17th, 23rd/24th and 30th/31st March. If you wish to gift aid your weekly offering by using envelopes, please complete a Gift Aid Form, available at the back of Church, and either hand it in to the Parish office or place it in the offertory collection. You will then receive a box of envelopes for your weekly collection.

OLL Ladies Group
We meet next Thursday, 14 March in Parish Centre from 10.30am. By popular demand we have a welcome return of Jo & Theresa who will be giving a demonstration on how to make small table arrangements, so please bring a small amount of greenery & secateurs if you have them. All women welcome, or just come along & join in the fun & good company.
