First Communion: Session 6

Chapter 10: Jesus does wonderful things

Introduction for parents

Key Questions

  • What is a miracle? A miracle is a wonderful thing which God does, which has no other explanation.

  • What is wine used for in the Mass? In Mass, God turns the wine into Jesus’s blood for us to receive at Communion.

Jesus drank wine at the Last Supper with his disciples and said that it was Blood, given for them to drink. This is why we use wine in the Mass.

God does something wonderful with the wine, just as Jesus turned the water into wine with a miracle. This wine becomes the Blood of Jesus, giving us joy and health and joining us to Jesus in the great feast of Mass.

Jesus told his disciples that he was like a Vine and they were its branches: we must not cut ourselves off from Him or we will wither.

Chapter 11: Jesus feeds the hungry

Introduction for parents

Key Questions

  • How does Jesus feed us? He gives us his Body and Blood in the Mass.

What is the bread used for in the Mass? In Mass, God turns the bread into the Body of Jesus which we receive at Communion.

The feeding of 5,000 is one of Jesus’s greatest miracles. The disciples knew that Jesus had done something amazing.

But the miracle has a deep meaning too: Jesus came to bring the love of God to us all. He wants to give us everything we need, both things for the body and things for the soul.

Just as bread keeps our bodies strong and healthy, so Jesus feeds our soul. He does this in Holy Communion. The priest takes the bread, blesses it and breaks it, just as Jesus did with the loaves. It becomes Jesus’s Body.

We receive Jesus in Communion.
